Calm Waters

By Tommia Wright

What is it about calm waters that seems to sooth the soul? Or better still, the reflection of a setting sun upon those same waters?

A stranger came to the door to ask what is necessary for peace. I recall an illustration that a pastor described as the perfect picture of peace: a bird finding shelter in a cliff-side during a storm. The pastor even brought the small painting in and it was true that even in the darkest of times amidst thunder, lightening and crashing waves, to be tucked away safely in a rock that won’t give way is peace and security.

I don’t recall the proper answer I gave the stranger before closing the door, mildly impressed by their boldness to pull up into another’s driveway, ignoring signs that indicate ‘leave alone’ in most residential areas. Their intrusion had disturbed my calm start of the day. When a friend from out of state asked why I preferred my current location on the West versus places I’ve seen and been, I said ‘the water and the mountains – REAL mountains – unlike the ‘majestic Rockies.’

In being home, I can enjoy the treasures such as sunsets on the water, indications of calmness at sea, or more specifically, a sound Sound. It is in the cool, calm waters that peace, comfort and a sense of security can be found – so my heart says.
