Beautiful Feet, Mighty Word

Cross of Glass - created by Tommia Wright

One of the challenges of a varying work schedule is not always being able to attend things the way one wants to. Today was the first time this year I was able to enjoy the wonderful hymns, a powerful sermon and words that remind me of why I’m here (in a more philosophical sense).

Aside from hearing a new organ today – oh and what wonderful additions one can be awashed in apart from standard pipes – a hymn was sung that, in six short, sweet verses put a memorable melody to the following verse: Romans 10:15 – “And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news.’ (Isaiah 52:7)” The hymn that was created based on this verse is “Spread, Oh, Spread, Though Mighty Word” http://www.ccel.org/a/anonymous/luth_hymnal/tlh507.htm

I recall upon moving to a new city, a new state, just looking for a new start away from what I left behind, the pastor and his wife pulled me aside and mentioned an outreach program beginning to take shape. I had mentioned that I was once an educator and the gleam in the pastor’s wife’s eye told me I was was about to find my way back.

We are where we are because of a talent or gift we have that might help someone’s need, or as I was told in this case, someone in need. Other times, we are where we are to meet someone we need, be it for a short or long time, someone who can help us see the light.

I enjoyed my time spent at the outreach center that has since become its own church. I enjoyed listening to the young voices singing songs fearlessly, bringing family, inviting friends to the gatherings, be it the weekly service, any number of classes or just a neighborhood potluck.

When it came time to spread the message about an upcoming event, the youngsters were the most eager, boldly knocking on doors and inviting whomever they knew. It is because of their strong faith, their familial supports that they spread the message as earnestly as they did. It is because of those small stepping stones that a once -store-shop-corner has become a church of its own.

“And how can they preach unless they are sent?”

Maybe my time out of state was short, according to some – maybe useless. However, to get an opportunity to help even in the smallest part in spreading a message so large… I know I had learned many wonderful things from my students there, things I hold on to in my heart while here at home.

Another memory of my time away – a classmate, John, illustrated the importance of what it was we were studying, what we had hoped to accomplish. In a darkened room, holding only an unlit candle, we watched and listened as John reminded us of those who held us on their lap, of those who taught us to read, of those who led the way. He took his candle, lit, and touched the person’s candle beside it. The passing of the flame continued  until the entire room was bright with flickering flames, until none of us were in darkness anymore.

“Great, the work they (we) have to do.” – be it in faith, in friendship, with family, however… There are many shining, burning points of light to help chase away the darkness.
