Filmsy Detour – Part 1

It would have made sense last Monday to discuss this, but who said everything had to be logical? While taking a morning stroll, enjoying the crisp cool air, it occurred to me that there were few movies of recent years that offered a similar comforting or rejuvenating feeling.

Roman Holiday (1953) was a film I had watched in its entirety only recently. How I missed this gem could be due to any number of silly reasons: my failure to focus on Gregory Peck’s films outside of “To Kill a Mockingbird” or my failure to look for more Audrey Hepburn films aside from “Wait Until Dark” or who knows how.

Oh, I was familiar with the familiar practical joke scene at the “Mouth of Truth” having seen the clip a number of times. Other than that, I hadn’t known the heart of the story. When finally viewed a half a dozen times (wonderful thing about libraries – being able to borrow things for free), I could see the clean, simple joy of the story, the innocence between a trio of characters enjoying life’s simple pleasures.

It’s nice to know that Hollywood hasn’t dared try to remake this classic, with its beautiful black & white cinematography, clear-cut morals and pure clean fun.
