Haunting Hymn

Returning to the hymns of Lent, one common theme can be found in terms of setting – dark, flat, haunting tones.

One of the best illustrations of this is the hymn, O Dearest Jesus, What Law Hast Thou Broken. With its four-beat measures and 11-syllable verses, the final quarter ending in five syllables.

The fifteen verses lead the singer and listener every step towards the cross, reflection on the resurrection and confidence in joining other saints in celebration.

To try to say more is to take away from the beauty that this hymn has to offer. If time permits, read through the verses; click on the midi link at the bottom to hear the tune.
