Return of Vitamin D

Mill Pond and Mt. Si in May

By Tommia Wright

“May the road rise to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, the rains fall soft upon your fields and, until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.” ~ Irish Blessing

Some people have a strong disliking towards the sun – it distracts from the necessary chores to be done; it shines brightly outdoors while one is stuck indoors (often in a window-less room); it burns too warmly; fill in the blank.

There is something to be said for a sunny day, even as the winds make their way down the mountain, over the water, through the valley. Different shadows are created as various flowers, pathways and broken limbs are illuminated. If one is up early enough to see the dew covering the grass, minute trails could be found by the wildlife passing by.

I am comfortable with most kinds of weather, equally happy with rainy days as I am sunny, taking walks when skies are bright blue or overcast.  Each day taking in the surroundings, no matter the weather, is a gift to embrace, for better or for worst.

Maybe those whose temperament within dependent on the temperature outdoors have more than just a craving for Vitamin D. Maybe it has more to do with unknown destinies, uncertainties or a need for a kneeling upon knees looking beyond the clouds and the sun.
