Happy “Pi Day”

"Pi Day" by Tommia Wright

Pi Time –

Yep, 3.14 is Pi Day for math lovers, number freaks and those looking for a good story. Given this week’s ‘homework focus’ on math – reading “Number Story: from Counting to Cryptography” by Peter M. Higgins – I couldn’t help but have some fun with pi day while eating cake. Below are five fun facts about Pi Day courtesy of the Christian Science Monitor – rearranged, of course.

3. It has stretched the bounds of the human mind.
Mentioned with this item are those who have been able to recite the value up to 67,890 digits in 24 hours. I find that an impressive feat for a couple of reasons. One, I can barely remember the 7 or 10 digit phone numbers of friends or co-workers (I’m slow to use speed dial on the cell phone) and 24 hours? I’m lucky to get through what’s on my plate for half that time!
1. It goes on forever.
I believe it. To solve the value completely, fully…No, it needs to hold the same mysteries as the cosmos, filled with billions and billions of stars.
4. Not even legal action could determine its value.
And here I wonder what it will take to enforce current existing laws such as ‘no talking on cell phones while driving’ or ‘stop signs really do mean stop.’

Now for the other stuff:

2. Computers can’t solve it.
I believe this. My computer can’t cooperate with me as it is in regards to pictures, puzzles, programs or processing. Right now, there’s a game in progress called ‘hide and seek’ involving folders gone hiding that I’m now seeking…

5. Happy birthday, Albert Einstein!
My pal, Al! He was/is to me for math and science what Easy Reader was for reading, Mr. Spock is  for logic and Josephine Tey is for writing. I’ll even confess that the NaNoWriMo Novel for 2009, “Call Me, Al” was strongly influenced by this wise man.

And that is how I’m justifying eating cake today on pi day! Have you played with numbers today?

  1. An amusing post. I have one mathematical friend who would find the read you recommended fascinating. Yours, I’m sure was a much better read.

I’m glad you enjoyed it! Actually found four fun books in the math section that day. (My library habit is to have books/discs checked out in groups of five.) I’ll share a bit more about Higgins and the others in the next couple of weeks.
