Thinkin’, Among Other Things

10.11.12

Yes, I like numbers and today’s date is just too fun!

  • 144 years ago, the electric voice machine was patented by Thomas Edison.
  • 128 years ago, Eleanor Roosevelt was born on this date.
  • Other favorite authors, actors, actresses and athletes were born on this day; athletic feats accomplished.
  • On this date, ten years ago, Jimmy Carter won a Nobel Peace Prize.
  • Three years ago, I was fortunate to get a job.
  • I actually stayed awake through an entire political debate, resulting in more questions than answers compared to when I watch or listen to half a debate.

All right, now that I’m done playing with numbers (and having already lost too many games of Yahtzee and Cribbage on the computer), time to share two shots of the day.

It pays to be slow getting into the car (well, trying to find the keys to unlock said car) while leaving Red Rocks.

Deer 2 by Tommia Wright

This creature was actually the third of four deer passing by casually along the drive from the amphitheater to the Trading Post, making their way up the hill.  The distance between me and the group was probably the closest I’d ever been – maybe half the distance between me and my usual breakfast companions from the breakfast nook. Like the rabbit at home, sometimes life throws a ‘slow down’ sign that  leads one to take pause. Since I was on holiday (yes, still a recovering workaholic), there was no guilt of meetings to attend, things to do, work to be done. I feel fortunate for what – and more importantly, who – is in my life right now.

I can’t help but think back to a metal plaque that was left in the corner cupboard of a home I lived in: “It’s not the number of years you live, but making the moments count.”
