March of the Droids by Tommia Wright

So, Winnie dared me to admit details of my ‘space cadet weekend.’ Well, for the second time (and going two days this time), I went to Emerald City ComiCon. The media guest list was impressive, so for two days, I indulged in listening to:

* Christopher Lloyd

* Chris Sarandon

*Felicia Day and Wil Wheaton

* Patrick Stewart

Like any convention I’ve attended, my mind’s spinning on possible characters and stories based on what was shared. From starts into acting, various projects of old, upcoming projects due, etc., it was enjoyable to hear their stories.

I did dare explore the gaming level of the convention – granted, most of it was foreign to me as I am primarily a strategy/computer game player. The details of the artwork, the involvement of the games, pieces and backgrounds was interesting.

The comic book level (the main portion of the show) allowed me to see artists at work, see panels created, get a personal request done (given the invitation to offer a ‘dare.’), and meet some jewelers, too.

Aside from the Sketchbook Project, my drawing skills are mostly from the Stick Figure School of Art.  But given the range of talent seen, I might try the impossible.

Some folks take their costuming skills seriously and that alone was spectacular to see. Who knew there were so many Dr. Who’s? (that’s a whole other post, since I’ve yet to see an ep or read a book involving the Tardis-traveler.) Star Trek, Star Wars, many a given sci-fi show and movie, with plenty of steampunk and aliens in the mix. My definition of ‘geek-dom’ is my Star Trek Academy polo shirt.

It was nice to meet some authors with their debut novels. While logic screamed ‘just keep walking,’ spare change proclaimed, ‘oh, maybe one or two (try three) books.’

Will I go again next year? Most likely. Did I have fun chatting with other geeks/nerds? Of course!

What guilty pleasure excursion do you enjoy?

    Sounds like a wonderful time. I have done any excursions unless you call today’s drive to the Literary Society meeting an excursion. Desert roads are always and experience.

      I can only imagine. Closest thing I put on the ‘dare I drive?’ list would either be Hwy18 or the Eastgate stretch at night.

        It’s the soft sand that can drift into the roadway that I fear. My daughter-by-marriage drives Highway 18 at night five to six nights a week after leaving her shift at the one plant. I cannot imagine.

Drop a Note.
