Jazz Walk 2015

“If art is to nourish the roots of our culture, society must set the artist free to follow his vision wherever it takes him.” ~ John F. Kennedy

To quote Dorothy from “The Wizard of Oz,” there’s no place like home. It was great fun to take in the Jazz Walk this past Saturday night (and surprisingly made it to the last note at the midnight hour)! More than twenty venues hosted musicians from far and near – duos, trios, quartets – many bands on hand to listen to, a la ‘speed date’ style.

Whether it was the vocalist who brought the songs of Cole, Fitzgerald or Ellington to life, or the big band swing, complete with a hint of Armstrong – each venue my friend and I visited had a great sound. For me, the highlight of the evening was hearing the local high school band – drawing an audience so large, people stood in the lobby of the movie theater to hear them.

The Valley supports the arts – be it music, painting, theater, or storytelling. To see so many families taking it in – a great way to offer variety at a young age, to allow the sampling now of what could be an artistic passion to come.

Wednesday Waters

Falls in March

Rivers drift by without
End, currently weaving through the
Fabric below of
Rocks and trees with
Eddies and more
Sounding silent, sometimes roaring
Hurling gallons to the depths below
In the ongoing cycle that
Nature deems
Go with the flow, like those in your dreams

Tuesday Tidbit

Little Things

What do you see when take to the path
The blades of grass or work-related math?
What do you notice as you turn to your right
The budding flowers or a street light?
What do you envision with leaves on the ground
A chore to do or old-turned-new found?
What do you appreciate as the day begins
The many possibilities before you or just an end?

Monday Moment

Rested Notes

Just listen to the rhythms
And let yourself get lost
Ziggin’ and zaggin’
Zoomin’ and zonin’
With the beats of the base
And the sounds of the horn
Let your soul dance along with
Krall, Ellington, Basie, Fitzgerald and more

Sunday Snapshot

drops

Find something far or near
Or somewhere between
Close up, downward, maybe
Unseen by the passerby, a
Second is all it takes.

Happy “Pi-Day!”

"Pi Day" by Tommia Wright

“Pi Day” by Tommia Wright

Hard to believe it’s “Pi Day” again! What’s a great way to start the day? With a peach pie and a Pi Fugue!

How will you celebrate this fun number day?

Is the mirror broken if you do not get to see
Your perceived reality or doorway to fantasy?
Is the black cat malcontent
Because it’s cursed for the way it went?
Is the ladder really to blame
Because you stepped under, ‘breaking a frame?’
And what of this of the 4-leaf clover
Or the rabbit’s foot (doubt it was willingly given over)
That supposedly improve things?
Do people cast fate onto
Things that aren’t what they seem?

Wednesday Waters

Riverside 13

Flowing
Past the challenges
Over them, between them
Carving paths beneath them
Knots and undertows beware
Every moment moves with, without a care
Take the present while you can as it
Swirls through your fingers

Fruit of the Spirit*

Love as you were loved
Joy be the gift you give
Peace be with you always
Forbearance, a virtue
Kindness – currency of the wise
Goodness does better in the world than cruelty
Faithfulness – what our Father seeks.

(Thank you, L, for the Galations 5:22 verse!)
