A Character’s Stroll

Wonderful illustration of a dry spell.

Sometimes, another artist’s eye creates a new interpretation of a ‘simple scene.’ Sheri’s take on the low river created a new space (and time) to consider for my characters Rita and Jared.

“You have to learn to look beyond the surface, see things that are often ignored or worse, taken for granted. Where you see torrents, I see a trickle. Where you see loss, I see opportunity.” Rita pointed her walking stick towards the bend. “A month ago, you would have thought you couldn’t venture that far out into the river. Now, you can  practically cross it without getting your feet wet.

“So, what are you waiting for, Jared, a dry riverbed or a flood? While you’re making up your mind, I’m going after the perfect skipping rock or two.”

Friday Fun

Stereoscenes by Tommia Wright

It’s less than a week before NaNoWriMo and things are being assembled, story-wise, soundtrack-wise, spinning-wise. Thanks in part to Reisha’s writing workshops, I had the possible seeds to a mystery. Thanks to the Peeps contest at work, playing with cameras, and a  Hitchcock film to work with, the what/when/why falling into place.

The “Where” has been fun, inspired by photos from the blogs I follow, the walks I take, the travels of my aunt. (The scenic tour from the blogs to be shared this weekend).

The details of the “Who’s” changes story after story. I hadn’t realized that I had a character by the name of Rita Fremont enter the picture – she’s engaged to Jared Russell, the photo journalist. Well, I’m enjoying Rita. She’s a world traveler (thank you Linda for the kind gift of the View-Master and pictures above), polyglot, eclectic music/art/literature lover. (One of her favorite groups is Agatha Christie from Russia – da, they’re real, and great.)

This morning, Rita shared with me her sense of humor (yes, I know it’s dangerously odd to say characters ‘talk’ but how else to explain the voices in one’s head?). Jared’s first visit to Rita’s place leads to the following introduction:

Rita gestured to the motley crew. “Meet the furry four- Fig, Isaac, Juice and Wayne.” She saw the confused look on his face then added, “You’ll figure it out.”

(Sigh) It could be that such a silly detail seems funny when stirring from sleep. Then again, it’s in that in-between moment that quirky (or quirkier?) things/ideas can be found.

Are you going to try NaNoWriMo? Are you more stabilized and sane as to how you start up your stories or steer your ideas? Any scenes/photos/artwork that inspire you to ‘step in’ and explore?

Fall’s Curtain by Tommia Wright

Along with a welcoming rain would be the vibrant colors of fall against the evergreen.

Friday Snapshot

Rebel Red 1 by Tommia Wright

Granted, the long drought ended as of today, but there’s something to be said about a couple of stubborn berries who have survived: cats, dogs, deer, elk and any other berry-picking-bandit.

Thinkin’, Among Other Things

10.11.12

Yes, I like numbers and today’s date is just too fun!

  • 144 years ago, the electric voice machine was patented by Thomas Edison.
  • 128 years ago, Eleanor Roosevelt was born on this date.
  • Other favorite authors, actors, actresses and athletes were born on this day; athletic feats accomplished.
  • On this date, ten years ago, Jimmy Carter won a Nobel Peace Prize.
  • Three years ago, I was fortunate to get a job.
  • I actually stayed awake through an entire political debate, resulting in more questions than answers compared to when I watch or listen to half a debate.

All right, now that I’m done playing with numbers (and having already lost too many games of Yahtzee and Cribbage on the computer), time to share two shots of the day.

Deer 1 by Tommia Wright

It pays to be slow getting into the car (well, trying to find the keys to unlock said car) while leaving Red Rocks.

Deer 2 by Tommia Wright

This creature was actually the third of four deer passing by casually along the drive from the amphitheater to the Trading Post, making their way up the hill.  The distance between me and the group was probably the closest I’d ever been – maybe half the distance between me and my usual breakfast companions from the breakfast nook. Like the rabbit at home, sometimes life throws a ‘slow down’ sign that  leads one to take pause. Since I was on holiday (yes, still a recovering workaholic), there was no guilt of meetings to attend, things to do, work to be done. I feel fortunate for what – and more importantly, who – is in my life right now.

I can’t help but think back to a metal plaque that was left in the corner cupboard of a home I lived in: “It’s not the number of years you live, but making the moments count.”

Wednesday Wackiness

Balanced Moon by Tommia Wright

Sometimes, silliness can be found while waiting at a light, and a quirky image that’s just right (another benefit of roaming about town as a passenger/tourist).

Monday Marvel of Nature

Spectacular Sun Setting by Tommia Wright

Sometimes it pays to be a passenger! Makes it that much easier to get shots such as these while en route to a friend’s house for supper.

Sunday Snapshots

Mayhem Creek by Tommia Wright

No matter what state I’m in, I’ll wander towards water…

And if there’s a decent trail to wander along, with plenty of water and snacks to spare, I’ll try that challenge, too.

Saturday Snapshot – on the Rocks

Red ‘n’ Green by Tommia Wright

Vacations are a good thing. So are wanderings just off the beaten path.

Some arches are best observed….

And sometimes, the visitors’ center does offer a wonderful view.
