Way With Words

Well, I finally remembered the motivator to keep me going while trying to Throw Out Fifty Things: storytelling time.

I became addicted to audiobooks by chance – browsing the media section of the library, grabbing something random off the shelf because the spine caught my eye and the back cover piqued my interest. The first book: Dick Francis’ “The Danger” read by Tony Britton. Not only did the first line hook me, the crisp British accent took me and the suspense of the story kept me going. It didn’t take long to track down all of Britton’s readings of Francis’ books. Where (or to whom) to go from there was the next challenge. There are some good readers, some dry readers and some too challenging to hear.

There are some readers I like for their range in caricatures, cadences and quick wit. There are some I enjoy just to hear them ‘out of character’ of well-known roles. To hear Jonathan Frakes imitate Patrick Stewart is one thing. To hear John DeLancie do the same is another. Yes, this space cadet will admit to owning most readings of Star Trek:TNG actors.

So, who kept me occupied while clearing the clutter? David Strathairn reading Louis L’amour’s “Hondo.” I had seen the movie a week before, aware that no one other than John Wayne could fill the boots of a strong character. Yet Strathairn’s reading was and wasn’t Wayne’s performance from screen to disc. It was much more. Then again, books always provide more for the mind’s eye than any movie can.

I figure by the time Hondo’s quest is completed, I will have found the resemblance of a crafting corner than the current state of chaos. Now that I think about it – as the bag of movies, music and other miscellany increases- I might know where the boxes of audiobooks are… I hope.
