Monday Musing

Two Cups by Tommia Wright

I am not a coffee drinker.

This is an obvious admission while sitting in Toad’s Coffeehouse this morning enjoying good company and a hot drink. The definition of my drinking problem would consist of teas and hot chocolates (and juices and certain carbonated sodas, but I digress). Coffee is something I never quite understood. Granted, if it tasted half as good as it smelled, I can see why some people claim the day hasn’t started until a carafe has been emptied.

Well, there’s one confession. I had one cup of coffee. Only one. With five packets of sugar added. Why? I wanted the coffee cup. Yes, the price paid for the blue cup pictured required five sugars to make it tolerable. And it was worth it! (Granted, trying to find a safe way to dispel the excess energy before family dinner with the parents was crucial). I learned my lesson on how to acquire the white cup sans coffee!

My mind meandered to movie and television references to the drink. Here are three that perked up:

* “D—n good coffee!”

Twin Peaks – a great scene with Agent Dale Cooper in the Double-R café, a slice of pie and a dang fine cup of coffee. The café in town still exists and a friend of mine told me that the pies are still made. Hmm, might be a good field trip this week to try a slice (sans the coffee).

* “It’s coffee time! Coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee! Cappuccino, java, YES!”

Dante’s Peak. Walking through the video store in town, my parents couldn’t understand why my brother and I kept telling them this film was a comedy when they found it in the drama section. This was just a horrible film. Really. So cheesy and-. Well, there was one redeeming line/scene that my brother and I liked and the reason why we defined this film as a comedy. Greg, one of the geologists anticipates the arrival of the mayor/coffee shop owner. Given his hyper delivery of it, methinks the mayor would have been tempted to switch him to decaf.

* “I know you’re mad at me, but did you have to take it out on the coffee?”

Alphas. A short summer-time series on sci-fi. There is a flashback scene between patient and doctor before an unexpected appointment occurs. The patient, Marcus Ayers, wants his doctor to be on his side and understand what caused his certain choice of events. Marcus, still believing he was in the right, chastises the doctor.

Hmm, I wonder if, having spent most of my life in the ‘coffee capitol of the states,’ I’ve just failed to find the right blend to try. Methinks there’s a new brew of trouble to investigate…

    Ha Ha! All the coffee references were great, and from a confirmed NON coffee drinker here!
    And yet now I must send you a few videos of the Gilmore Girls…

  2. Confessions are good for the soul. I’m one that puts the coffee on before I open the Bible for morning devotions. I shall confess I do not like tea. The cherry pies and coffee were the only decent thing in that cafe at the time of Twin Peaks.

      It has been so long since I’ve been to that cafe I don’t rightly know what all they have available. I’ve never been trusted to prepare coffee anywhere – aside from having a container of instant at the ready for ’emergency conditions.’ Well, wait, I did buy a coffee maker when I was living in Denver. Never used it, let alone for coffee, but it helped with out of town visitors, that’s for sure.
