Friday Ficlet – Running Track

Tracks O’erhead by Tommia Wright

Sometimes a walk can help clear the mind, erase the workweek, bring a fresh step into the upcoming weekend. Sometimes, things seen can help answer questions etched on a writer’s block as to ‘who-where- why–when-how-what?’ factor of a character’s motives. And sometimes, looking up just gives a new view.

Running Track

Vincent Russell leaned back against the post determined to slow his breathing down as his legs screamed in agony from the sprint in the rain. He hadn’t pushed himself this hard before, hadn’t raced without stretching before.

The rumbling of the post reverberated down his spine, an indicator to pull the baseball cap over his eyes. In his furious hurry, he had failed to note the time, fortune being with him as the arrival was sorely needed. The vibrations helped ground him, return his breathing to normal.

Vince couldn’t explain his fascination with trains, not to his parents or friends, or his sister, Helena, who always joked it was an ‘inner yearning to live a hobo’s life.’ The words escaping him, he sought no reason to let go of an enjoyable means of transportation, to see the country, and maybe, see the world.

It would take a miracle for him to get out from his parents’ sight however.

Good writing, also a good way to develop character.
