“There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.” ~Rod Serling
Today’s “Wednesday Words” will take an audio detour, beginning with imagination, inspiration and infinite possibilities.
Yes, it’s possible to pick up any sci-fi classic or contemporary story. But when was the last time you let the storyteller take you away?
- Alien Voices was put together by Leonard Nimoy and John DeLancie. Focusing on the classics, they assembled a stellar cast to bring the stories to life the way radio dramas did. If you chance to listen to War of the Worlds, it comes with an original ‘sequel’ co-written by DeLancie.
- Seeing Ear Theatre, an off-shoot of SciFi (before the change to…yet to be determined), offered a combination of classics and contemporary stories as well – Octavia Butler, Neil Gaiman, Kim Stanley Robinson. Each story was performed by a full cast.
- The Twilight Zone Radio Dramas is a definite delight to take you to another dimension.
For an inspiring story, treat yourself to:
- The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch and
- The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Bloom
As for infinite possibilities – that’s where the joy of the local library comes in – between CDs and cassettes to borrow (if they can still be found), to preloaded players of popular titles, to downloads available for the taking – courtesy of Overdrive.
Let your imagination soar, your spirits lifted or catch up on your studies, laughs or what have you.
Heard a good book lately?
One I read lately (I have a self-imposed, audiobooks only in the car or on the elliptical rule – and since I can’t drive or do the elliptical right now, I’m not listening to any!) that was fascinating was Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore – http://www.amazon.com/Mr-Penumbras-24-Hour-Bookstore-Novel/dp/0374214913 It was sort of like a grown-up version of the Mysterious Benedict Society series, but also included some fascinating aspects of google, too. It was an interesting one and not one I could tell exactly where it was really going to go.
I’ll have to check that out!
I could write down three different novel names right now, but I won’t do that. This is you r space. I do have one Sci-Fi that came highly recommended and hope to be able to start it before the end of this month. Happy reading.
I’m curious about your three choices – this list is open to any and all additions and recommendations! (smile)
Oh, dear, you asked for it. Okay, here they are: Earthbound, Gather The Children, and Before We Leave. I can tell you that the Professor Emeritus from the local college says that they are the best character development of any Science Fiction novel.
(SMILE!) Agreed!!
Thank you!
What a great idea. Love it! Thank you for sharing the great info!
