New Page, New Folly…

…old poem.

I am a writer. I am also a member of the local writers’ group: SnoValleyWrites! and in March of 2010, we gave our first performance or “Word Jazz.” We had an assortment of prompts to choose from, with the possible target being publication.

I forgot what journal this was for, but the prompt was ‘laws of attraction.’ Anyone who knows me knows I am a bookaholic (or bibliophile, if one must choose the proper term). I am a recovering buyer (translation, cold turkey on purchases – very thankful for libraries!), with more bookcases than practical pieces of furniture -if one were to have company over.

In keeping with the ‘may/May’ topic and variations thereof (National Blog Posting Month’s theme is ‘maybe’), I have decided to finally share that poem, never before in ‘proper print.’ (aka – I have never sent this out for publication)

Laws of Attraction/Distraction

Psalm 67

“May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine upon us.” ~Psalm 67, verse 1.

This is the benediction spoken near the end of service every week. These are the words that have me bowing my head in thankfulness while determined to chase away doubt, remembering the purpose and meaning of Easter.

Faith, as defined by Webster is 1) an allegiance to duty ora person, 2) belief and trust in and loyalty to God; belief in the traditional doctrines of a religion; a firm belief in something for which there is no proof, complete trust.

In a sad observation of how many aisles are devoted to ‘self-help’ and how many ads are placed or broadcasting ‘the perfect cure’ to buy, how often or how easy is it for us to ignore the most significant support there is?

In re-reading the story of Jonah, it is amazing to see that while we may believe we’re entitled to be on one course of action, to have a certain item or position or reward or what have you, God is the one who knows what is in store for us. This is not to say that we lack free will or that we no longer have to worry about using things such as common sense or reasoning. Whatever trials come our way, there is a purpose, a way out, a possible redirection towards what we have turned away from.

I am sure there have been plenty of times where we have suffered the ‘silent treatment’ from someone close by. That silence, that moment of someone’s back being turned towards us hurts. There are options of how to deal with that, and we can only pray that we have or will choose the right one. It is easy to curse the driver who cut us off or the person who soured our day, or even the dropped item that strikes our toe. When was the last time one has given a compliment, a word of forgiveness or support or a blessing?

May it come easy to you. It is a reminder needed daily for me.

Star Wars

“May the 4th be with you.”

Yes, I am a space cadet and I’ve no problem with it. While I wasn’t born early enough to watch the original Star Trek series when it first aired, I was influenced by the animated version and eventually the re-runs. Little did I know that as a child I was exposed to serious, societal issues in such an ‘out of this world’ format. As far as I was concerned as a child – Spock ruled, and so did Uhura, Scotty and Sulu.

Star Wars has been and always will be Luke and Leia Skywalker’s story. Yes the prequel trilogy was enjoyable, the special effects impressive, Qui-gon and young Obi-Wan fascinating, but to try to consider the saga as George Lucas had in mind – no, I will not be forced from my preferred interpretation of focus.

“May the Force be with you,” has been uttered at least a dozen times in the half-dozen films. The most significant moment would be from a reluctant, unbelieving Han Solo in making the remark to  Luke for the final attempt against the Death Star. Which character has given the greeting the most? I want to say Obi-Wan, however I am not entirely sure. I wouldn’t hesitate to say that someone knows that answer with confidence.

What is the Force (or the Schwartz if one has viewed Mel Brooks’ parody)? There are different explanations given throughout the film series, without it being ‘one specific thing.’ Almost any science fiction series includes in its world building a belief system or guideposts for the lands, planets, what have you. Here on plain planet Earth, most of us have Faith. What is Faith?

Will have to ponder that tomorrow.

Movie Dreams

“Many dreams, all useless,” says Leopold to the mysterious intruder in his quarters turning the pages in a sketchbook that is a collection of present dreams to one, of historical importance to the other.

Kate and Leopold is a fun romantic comedy, ten years old. Another twist to the ‘out of their element’ stories, this one is on a temporal level. Is it better to be in the current century with its fast pace, intense technology and ‘modern conveniences’ or is it better to be in an early time where things were slower and less complicated yet striving for progress still existed?

Dreams help in sorting out the madness of the day or find solutions to challenges faced tomorrow. They help sort out events in our past or set goals for the future.

True, George Bailey’s dream is more an experience of alternative realities, bringing to light the fact that the smallest things we do can have large impacts on others. Or they can be a collection of nightmares needing to be untangled to sort the chains of the past before venturing into an unknown future – think Logan’s troubles in X-Men United.

Then again, there is the curious question of what is reality, what is fantasy and when is it time to move away from one world to the next? A curious double-feature to try (or triple, if one includes Topper) would be Anthony Minghella’s Truly, Madly, Deeply, followed by Burr Steer’s Charlie St. Cloud. While similar in theme to Kate and Leopold in terms of ‘trapped in other worlds’ – these two films look at the steps of grief and the challenge of holding on versus moving on. Are they dreams that are useless or the stepping-stones needed to find our own rhythm and pace in life, in knowing which way to go?

Moving Forward – Maybe

Trail of May by Tommia Wright

While April lent or lost itself to much fooling around (or foolishness, giving the way they intertwine), at least it can be said that new pages of photos were added, while the total post count was few.

The NaBloPoMo challenge focuses on the word “maybe.” With the group of friends who support me in recklessly weaving words, ‘maybe’ is too wishy-washy (although I did get away with a poem that began every line with it). With other folks who know me, ‘maybe’ was the swinging pendulum that was used as an excuse of why one never dared to jump the abyss (above which said pendulum swung). While April was filled with many foolish endeavors – some of which never saw the end of the finish line – May is the month where confidence and routine bloom strong again.

Surrounded by books (a fortress I will not surrender without a fight), I am selecting various lines, chapters, snippets that feature ‘May’ or ‘may’ or even ‘maybe.’ There might be a few songs and films to play with, too.

While today’s May Day brought a bright example of spring’s return, tomorrow brings back the regular rain. The post-April showers will not dampen my spirit however, as rested and revving to ramble about projects anew, May 2011 is the month of “Will Do!”

Falling Forward or Slowing Down?

Double-Log Falls by Tommia Wright

(Sigh)

In looking at the relatively low number of entries this month, my first knee-jerk reaction was guilt. I’m good at that, practically a grad student in it.

The other night, a good friend of mine looked me in the eye and dared me to ‘slow down.’ As a recovering workaholic, that two-word combination is about as practical as a four-letter word like ‘rest’ or ‘play’ or a certain f-word like ‘fun.’ So, the challenge was on – trade yarn for yards of work. It was a challenge, but a fun one at that. The tasks I left undone are still there, I’m sure. The world hasn’t ended; this fool’s folly postponed another day.

There’s a particular trail I enjoy, one I used to walk daily. Lately, that has been a bit of a challenge, but managed an escape during the rain/sleet/snow/sunny day. This particular waterfall is my favorite resting point, a moment of pause to enjoy the best soundtrack in the world. Yes, I’m music-dependent, but the time found to relish the bird-song, the creaking of the branches and the sound of rushing waters hits the perfect crescendo with this falls.

So, as this week comes to an end, a renewed energy of creative posts beginning and finally remembering (thanks, friend!) to find that middle-ground of balance, time to enjoy what remains at a saner, slower, steadier pace.

What was I saying (thinking)?

Silence is foolish if we are wise, but wise if we are foolish.

–Charles Caleb Colton

I mentioned that this could be the month of folly. Well, for the first bit of it, I decided to ponder different undertakings that one would sanely choose not to do at the same time.

Maybe it wasn’t so much the combination of adventurous endeavors I chose but foolishly telling some folks around me about them. And once someone knows about something you’re doing, that’s when it’s too late to wish no one knew what you were up to because curious minds want to know.

Why do we sometimes tell friends, family, complete strangers (when one really isn’t paying attention) about challenges, classes, ‘crazy’ ideas? Is it for encouragement? Accountability? Who knows. Maybe it’s the hope that someone might talk us out of it before we go too far.

Counting Fools

Granted this is a day late, and foolishly short (thank you WordPress for the opportunity of time manipulation).

A few quick findings about fools:

  • There are 78 mentions of the word in the Bible
  • Proverbs has the bulk of the references at 45
  • Over 30+ songs with the word “Fool” in the title
  • At least 300 quotes pertaining to fools
  • 230 movies with the word ‘Fool’ in the title (this includes international translations)

And this found by one fool creating a new version of folly- how foolish.

An End Note…

…that is really the beginning of new discovery for some – I hope.

In spending a month focusing on various things musical – ignoring instrument instruction, evolution of promotions and dance, videos and medium – I already knew how this last theme-entry would go.

Granted, I was very tempted to spend an entire week on Martin Luther, Bobby McFerrin, Cyndi Lauper, Seal, Annie Lennox, Sarah McLachlan and even Weird Al. I didn’t even consider weaving in music from performers such as Brule, Vasquez, Tiger Tiger, Vince Redhouse, the Shenandoah Sisters or Jim Pepper. I could have focused on the hymns playing softly in the background as James Earl Jones read the Bible – something that can distract me, resulting in replaying the missed chapters. Or the enhancement of some pieces of music with the right narrators for: Peter and the Wolf, Portraits of Freedom by Aaron Copland and Roy Harris to name a couple. Maybe those will be for another time.

Today’s post focuses on music-makers. I tried to find links directly to the sites of some songwriters and composers I enjoy, but alas I have to find contentment with the few gems I did unearth:

  • The Little Black Bottles – a local band with one recording out and another in the works. The songs range from fun to thoughtful, from werewolves to zombies.
  • Angelo Pizarro – a guitarist whose serendipitous way of playing wonderfully illustrates how he plays so many different styles flawlessly.
  • Steve Thoreson – a vocalist whose songs have been heard the world over. It was the early piano-playing days that said music would be his golden key.
  • Little Mary – a Blues musician with a sunny disposition no matter what, she can get a band to follow her lead or lure a packed room close with an acoustic performance.
  • Chris Daniels and the Kings – a band who puts the swing back in sing. Full of bras and sass, it’s hard not to get on your feet and dance when Chris and the Kings play.

Songs about Singing

It begins with One Voice that says I Will Sing because I Hear Music and it makes you want to Sing a Song and perhaps I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing. With a new rhythm found, maybe I’ll make time to Dance to the Music.

Then again, when all’s said and done, Let’s Face the Music and Dance.
