Friday Fast One – Imagination Edition

My New Library Card

It pays to lose a library card. I don’t get into the city often, especially on a weeknight. But receiving the final notice that I had until Friday to collect my requested item (The Complete Shakespeare Sonnets) before it was sent back prompted me to change plans. I owned the book on cassette tape. It died. I cried. And finding a copy to buy was a bit hard – I tried (but I digress).

I grabbed my CD case off the holds shelf, went to the checkout stand – and didn’t have my card. Unlike my county card, I didn’t have the 13 digits memorized, so a replacement card was needed.

I loved it when the librarian told me the new cards came with a key chain version (I promptly put mine on my ‘card collection ring’ once the traditional size card was signed!). There were six designs to choose from and I was drawn to “Imagination,” although I confess, the decision was a challenge.

I was four years old again, a library card in hand, mind spinning with access to materials to nourish the mind, soul and imagination – oh the JOY!

Three quick quotes about the joys of reading:

Books let us into their souls and lay open to us the secrets of our own.  ~William Hazlitt

The smallest bookstore still contains more ideas of worth than have been presented in the entire history of television.  ~Andrew Ross

Good friends, good books and a sleepy conscience:  this is the ideal life.  ~Mark Twain

Best one to enjoy-

To quote LeVar Burton, “A book lets you zoom through time and space.”

How about you, dear reader – any particular small items that bring you joy?

  1. Books are my small items and obsession. Other than that, the rings Lanny bought for me. For some reason, he delighted in doing that. Don’t forget, a good science fiction book makes the imagination soar. Of course, God’s Word does that for the soul.

Pardon the delay; I had to think about a proper response. I would say books are part of your many talents. As for rings, those indeed can be beautiful, meaningful things. (smile).

  2. Wow! Sure beats the old ones typed on colored card stock. 🙂 Good design choice! Makes me want to go get a new library card.

I highly recommend it – if you need the city card! (smile) I don’t want to get a new county card because I have my 8-digits memorized (new one’s too long)

Hmmm, I also love books -of any size!
    Small things…flowers, babies & puppies, 🙂

Dangerous detour after work, lost in research for a pending project. Left with an armload of books, a wish/hold list equally long, and a Twilight Zone classics DVD. (smile)

Lost my library card once, cost me way more than it should have to renew the dang thing (all those over due fees and fines and such) learned my lesson well!

    • TommiaW's avatar tommiaw says:

I just finished paying off the current collection of fines (amazing how fast those dime-a-day deals turn to dollars). I memorized this card number because I’ve only lost my wallet once (sans drivers’ license in the coat pocket). What angered me was the lost library card!

before the purchase and subsequent “love affair” with my beloved (and this is not an endorsement for apple – yeah, right! – iPad, I basically camped out in the library twice a week, especially during my time in Coventry
Love ’em for all the right and wrong reasons!

Just getting back into my ‘groove’ of spending more than an hour inside the local library. Still plotting for a ‘full day’ at the city one. (silly grown-up responsibilities getting in the way)

  5. Reading vs TV – no comparison! I totally understand wanting to collect the “series” of cards. 🙂

    • TommiaW's avatar tommiaw says:

There’s a great quote by Groucho Marx, “I find television to be very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go in the other room and read a book.”

I love books but I’m also deeply in love with my iPad. It gives me joy (for the most part).

I confess I like the options that the Kindle PC app has allowed (mainly getting Mari Collier’s books, among others). Now to figure out Zinio for the magazines. (smile)
