Over
This way
That way
Either way
Roam
Really coasting
Ever floating
Swimming ‘round
Toward home
The rafters don’t stand a chance
The ducks like it just fine.
When the drought hits
And levels dip
The tubers don’t have time
To wait for the rains
When the sun peeks out
And never mind swimmers
As parents shout
(Waders are just as hard to find).
Gone are the days when the river was dredged
Each flood adds more to the ever present sludge.
Yet one of these day (or years, to be fair)
The banks you see now
Probably won’t be there.
April Showers did bring May Flowers
To the tea party of the day
What to have, what to drink
What kind of games to play?
Maybe some petals for the table
And some crayons, too.
Whatever the party brings today
Simple fun will do.
Forget the bicycle built for two
When this tiny motor will do
In reducing the time it takes
Lessening the distance between me and you.
Then again, with a dual-bike
It won’t take long to reach the hike
And the places we could go
With or without the earlier trike.
Of course, the most fun
Would be where the wheel is one
A lot of balance would be at stake
One missed turn, a tumbling we’d take.
Do we seek a holy grail,
Fearing death if we should fail?
Do we put the wrong things on the pedestal?
Failing to see what’s before us all?
Do we have a cup that overflows
Falling on us blessings or woes?
“When all’s said and done, all roads lead to the same end. So it’s not so much which road you take, as how you take it.” ~Charles de Lint
To what end will we go in circles
Random detours, reasoned defaults
Impositions and impossibilities
Aligned, await along
Life’s destiny
See the glass half-empty/half full – your choice
& yet we complain of the pebble in the shoe.
To what way to we walk
Rough, rugged paths or smooth or naught
Amazing things to be found
Imagination, support – limits unbound
Live life as the gift it is, the present before you now.
Splendid connections and discoveries
I think if Huck had tried it now
He wouldn’t get far anyhow.
Jim wouldn’t see the closing banks.
Opportunity in the open would be
a moment of thanks.
I think if we tried it now
We wouldn’t get far anyhow.
With the rules, the regs, and the fines
It’s worse than getting tangled up in vines.
Yet the river’s always the River Hope.
Pretty dogs so nice to touch
To share the unwanted items from lunch
Coat so soft, replaces the blankie
Best friend every, thankie.
Upon the rails there in pairs
See the sights from most anywhere.
Engine conserves the feet
For now, just take a seat.
Until the end of the
Line arrives.
(Or for a completely sleep-deprived poem…)
Lolly, lolly, lolly
Leave the adverbs here.
Jolly, jolly, jolly,
Leave emotions there.
Keep the story simple
Don’t exaggerate, dear.
Let the story stay upon the track
Unless imagination’s what the Muse does lack…
