Tuesday Tidbit

Kat

“I think the older I get the more creative I get, I don’t have the distractions that I had when I was younger.” ~Marc Almond

Hard to believe this was Kat two years ago, easily distracted with flying, crumpled library receipts, fallen pens and pencils (her doing – in failed attempts to get to one of the desk tops), and whatever her brother, Kit was up to.

She has taken a different approach lately and Kit has taken to jumping on my lap or between me and the screen, or worse, getting between my hands and the keyboard. It makes for some interesting typing.

My distractions are probably the same in number, different in depth. There’s still work and school (creative, not academic-yet) and time with family – NEVER a bad thing.

I read on a site about the debate on who is easier to teach – kids or adults. It’s almost a non-question, many said and I agree: it depends on the topic, the motive and the purpose for parties involved.

S.K. Nicholls had a great post about beloved books. The timing was perfect, given that the newly formed writing group, Eastside Writes, partnering with the artists in the area, hosted an event about writing about your favorite children’s book.

I had planned to attend, mind spinning about with ideas and remembrances. Instead, I let work claim my attention (catching up on month end reports, etc.), followed by sleep. Did this mean I didn’t go and learn what the course had in mind?Yes. Do I feel a bit guilty. Yes. Followed by no, knowing the priority of needs. But I digress.

I have discovered that I have allowed myself to play more, to discover more, to write more and to be more creative. More explanation to follow later….

As you wake up to each new day, with the quickly passing months and new years to the birthday celebrations, what have you discovered?

Sunday Snapshot

SpamstageI’m glad I managed to reclaim my lost Geek Card when I watched “Monty Python’s Holy Grail” not long ago. It helped in the quirky enjoyment of the 5th Avenue Theatre’s locally cast production of Spamalot.

What happens when you attend a play with someone who has limited knowledge of Monty Python (aka none)? Enjoyment on a different scale. To see Mom laugh was an afternoon well spent.

The last time we had been to this theatre was to see “The Phantom of the Opera,” all four of us. My brother and I loved it; my brother saving up to see it again with a friend. My parents – not so much. They decided to share with us that evening over dinner that musicals weren’t their thing.

Understandable. Not all musicals are palatable. Thinking about tonight’s Oscars, the same could be said for movies. Haven’t seen a single film that is spotlighted one way or another. The Grammys? There’s a reason why I listen to my portable player or CDs – I know what my ears can expect.

When was the last time  you stepped into something unknown to you?
