Your Local Automated Library

Friday Fast One –
On the last day of the Library Lover’s Month, is this something you’re seeing at your area branches?

Being Library Lovers’ Month, I thought it only proper that the kids and I should head to our local library. Seriously, to go a whole month without a library visit is unheard of for us, but moving and sickness set us back. When we walked in, our new library felt all wrong to me. For one thing, it had one of those really high ceilings with lots of columns and windows in the roof with an office section in the center like a super column. Maybe the architect was going for openness. It was certainly impressive, but I felt like an ant. There were two librarians on opposite ends of the circulation desk. There I was, at the front of that massive desk, wondering which one to walk over to.

We toured the building to get acquainted with the layout. One of my kids commented on how loud it was…

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”
~George Bernard Shaw

Leslie Nan Moon is an amazing artist and wonderful instructor. Four of us gathered to play outside of our usual medium (clay, paints, collages, words) and discovered the basics of block printing. Some silliness with styrofoam before cutting into the blocks.

Sunday Snapshot: Walking on the Moon

Today’s belated shot is in response to the Daily Prompt: What giant step did you take where you hoped your leg wouldn’t break? Was it worth it, were you successful in walking on the moon, or did your leg break?/Photographers, artists, poets: show us RISK.

Well, this weekend’s adventure would involve ‘breaking a leg,’ so to speak.

StageThree amazing days of play, where one of the key rules was that there were no rules. Well, no – there was no judgement allowed. I met and enjoyed the company of a couple of dozen creative individuals with varying experiences with the improv. Some of us trying it for the first time, others playing with it for years. Disconnected from the ‘real world’ while building worlds of our own, within and without allowed for many discoveries.

How often do we keep ourselves from taking a risk because we fear we’ll fall?If that’s the case, remember:

Heights

(From Batman Begins) “Why do we fall? So we may learn to pick ourselves up.” Thomas Wayne.

Falls

(From Lifehack) “If we did all the things we are capable of, we would literally astound ourselves.” Thomas Edison

Friday Fast One – Fun

camping cornerWow, this fits the Daily Prompt for today: Imagine that tomorrow, all of your duties and obligations evaporate for the day. You get the day all to yourself, to do anything you please. What types of fun activities would make your day?/Photographers, artists, poets: show us FUN.

Well, I’ll need plenty of light to carry out the day of exploration with family and friends – beginning in ice caves, trail tunnels and maybe Underground Seattle. Or maybe have several thermoses filled with tea and hot chocolate while I enjoy a walkabout with a fully charged battery and and empty digital card (or the standard Olymus/Nikon ready with their rolls of film).

Or maybe I’d continue what I have managed to enjoy these past couple of Saturdays – binge reading. Thanks to many a book-based blogger, my wishful reading list has grown (along with new releases from FreeValley Publishing).

What would you do with your day of fun?
