Food for Thought

Two interesting reads regarding books and libraries. First, was this NPR piece from a few days ago called, “How Scholastic Sells Literacy to Generations of New Readers.”

Some fear that with all the gadgets and gizmos, texting and twittering, that the art of just reading may be lost. Not so, as this article NPR article illustrates, about the Scholastic Writing Awards.

What I recall about Scholastic were the book order forms. This was better than the Sears Toy catalog and I believed I could get away with finding/getting almost every book in there. The excitement while trying to cut a straight line to separate the order strip from the form, the impatience of getting the parental signature let alone the stuffing of the envelope with said strip and money that didn’t need to be spent on milk for lunch time anyway…

The first book I was able to buy on my own was the Peanuts Lunch Bag Cookbook. For a first-grader, this was a big deal because now I had the ‘rules of making my own lunch!’ It was a dream. There were only two recipes in the entire collection my parents trusted me to make and take to school – peanut butter & jelly or the tuna fish sandwich. I still have that book and sometimes wonder if the recipes there would taste better than some popular/available options now.

The other article of note dealt with libraries loaning unique items. Libraries have always found ways to benefit their communities, so the idea of lending tools and other necessities to patrons doesn’t seem surprising.

Ann Arbor District Library Associate Director Celeste Choate sums it up best: “We can’t be everything to everyone, but we can provide a lot of opportunities to people to try out new things.”

What was I Wondering Wednesday?!

Just like Jaws by Tommia Wright

Just like Jaws by Tommia Wright

Ever have one of those days that went into the unknown – lost without really finding anything? Or worse, time sneaking up  on you like Jaws from beneath a supposedly calm surface?

That was my day today and I didn’t like it. Oh, I accomplished my work (swearing there are probably three ‘hot topic items’ to complete before the weekly meetings). Made it to writers cafe (a healthy thing for the creative mind), and remembered to keep an appointment (only a couple of weeks overdue). Even grabbed a copy of Marilu Henner’s book, Total Memory Makeover. Whether I’ll finish that and the other Henner book by the due date will be the next question as, alas, I am so woefully behind on my daily digests for blogs. But I digress.

What has taken up my time of late (aside from playing catch-up on my slightly better Camp NaNoWriMo word-count, researching a few work projects at once – drafting bold plans there, preparing for another Portland trip to go to the Sketchbook Project Tour, and too many other things) is a new level of madness for me. More on that possibly next week…maybe. Probably. It will show up in the SVW Bookstore when it happens.

So, dear reader, if you’ve wondered why I may have been absent from your blogs of late, this is part of the reason why. Hopefully I will play proper catch-up/binge reading, soon.

In the meantime, advice from Dori, the fish in “Finding Nemo,” comes to my scatter-brained mind of late: “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming…”

Wandering Far from Home

Here is my response to day’s Daily Prompt:  Tell us about the farthest you’ve ever traveled from home. Photographers, artists, poets: show us DISTANCE.

Ruins by Tommia

The Roman Holiday was the most exhilarating time away from my regular routine of study/work/sleep. The week there could have been a year of enjoyment and discovery. The furthest I had ever gone away from home, it’s a trip I’d be tempted to take again, as a detour to/from Paris, France.

Wonderful Day: National Teddy Bear Picnic Day

Lamb Chops and the Three Bears by Tommia Wright

Lamb Chops and the Three Bears by Tommia Wright

Today is National Teddy Bear Picnic Day. Thought that fit perfectly with the Weekly Photo Challenge of Nostalgic.  Remember when a toy could be given without a movie/cartoon/television tie-in? Remember when Lincoln Logs and Legos were basic, not thematic and color-coded? Remember when toys requiring batteries was rare (versus mandatory now, it seems) and games didn’t necessarily have to end in death and violence (unless it was Clue or Risk)?

To find the basic toys that allow for play – an etch-a-sketch, kaleidoscopes, paper dolls, tinker toys, view finders building blocks – you have to go to a specialty toy store now, unless you’re lucky to find them in the big-name stores (assuming there are helpful clerks who know what you’re talking about, too).

Shopping for younger cousins has become a challenge, now with mini-tablets, ‘first laptops/first cell phones’ etc. A friend told me what happened when they gifted a Rubik’s Cube to someone – “How do you turn it on? Why doesn’t it light up?”

Others takes on Nostalgic:
