What are your thoughts on the choices of some bookstores? Is Amazon to blame for the artists’ ambitions to share their work?

Thought About…

…learning more things about WordPress – what can I do, how can I do it, etc. Some bloggers do a great job of including videos in their post. I kept putting it off and putting it off…until now.

(THANK YOU, dear reader for your patience in my previous usage of embedded links).

Well, decided not to put it off any longer – just had to share this video I found via one of my other reading logs. A minor victory of things learned.

Wondering Wednesday

Would You Rather... by Tommia Wright

Would You Rather… by Tommia Wright

Today’s Daily Post – INTJ asked Do parties and crowds fill you with energy, or send you scurrying for peace and quiet?

I take after my parents on this – avoid crowds unless absolutely necessary. Or, like my brother – if surrounded by good friends in an adventurous setting, then it’s sane insanity. Otherwise, if I have to go and there aren’t any familiar faces (be it convention, conference, what have you), then there’s a strong chance I’ll keep close to the door or be sure that an easy escape route exist.

Don’t get me wrong – I love my adventures in the city (this includes some of the madness that came with Emerald City Comicon, or larger than usual crowds at the SAM). If I go solo, there’s no one to lose but myself. If I go with friends, then I’m ‘anchored’ in terms of sanity, safety and squashing the ‘flight’ response.

Tonight, I could (should) feel guilty in bailing out on two possible appointments. Instead, I took comfort in reading my meditations and drawing. Yes, the drawing was part of the Arthouse Co-op project collection, and technically there was a deadline to tonight’s doodling, but it was soothing, letting the lines just go in time to the music.

Read a wonderful post by Denise this evening that supported my choice, not that I needed outside justification; it’s nice to know I’m not alone in the need of ‘rest’ or ‘slowing down.’ There’s a reason why “The Introvert’s Way” by Sophia Dembling is one of my favorites.

Then again, my time with the meditations is wonderfully quieting.

How about you? Comfortable among the crowds or secure in the silence?

Tuesday Tunes – the Williams Edition

Make Mine Music by Tommia Wright

Make Mine Music by Tommia Wright

I don’t know if it’s because part of me is still  in ‘space cadet mode’ or because I had finished watching the musical special of John Williams on one of the soundtracks.

Here are a couple of marches to have fun with:

The Imperial March sent chills down my spine because of the size of the man/machine on the screen when I first saw Star Wars in theatres.

Raiders March evoked a sense of adventure for me, the melody fitting Indiana Jones perfectly.

While not quite a ‘march’ – this theme was perfect for the procession of prehistoric creatures brought back to life.

Then there’s the March of the Villians from Superman, with its whimsical high notes and light mood for comic relief.

Have a different favorite Williams score or different composer completely? What melodies/scores set the tempo for your day?

Monday Moment

Gates Sr. by Tommia Wright

“We believe that every single school should prepare every single student to succeed in college.” William H Gates Sr.

We chanced to make our way through the Visitor Center of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and, as the overhanging banner said, ‘entered curious, left enlightened.’

The information is presented in an interactive style – levers to adjust, ropes to pull, things to create, photos to take, ideas to share via sticky note, card and/or computer entry.

There are six components to the center:

  1. The Voices Gallery – various stories of those behind the ideas and supports to the projects world-wide.
  2. Family and Foundation Gallery – A brief explanation of the Gates family values and a question for the visitor: “What would your foundation do?”
  3. Partnerships Gallery – An explanation of how some of the grantees set their goals and measure their results. The question to the visitor: “Would you make the same choices?”
  4. The Theater – Multimedia presentations about the world-changing work of the partners.
  5. Innovation and Inspiration Gallery – A chance for the visitor to explore problem-solving strengths and propose solutions to real-world issues. The opportunity: To share ideas with others.
  6. Sidewalk Viewing – A quick overview of inspiring ideas to share with others.

True, there is no such thing as a ‘perfect foundation’ on this side of the heavens; each organization has its challenges. However, most of what I saw within the center had me considering many things, from the innovative ways to try and prevent disease to new ways of getting the basics to those in need.

The Innovation and Inspiration Gallery had a collection of cards one was able to select and comment on, with a chance to hang them on one of many ‘sharing trees.’

The cards were:

  • I support __ and you should too.
  • I pledge to __.
  • I volunteer for __.
  • __ really needs your help.
  • Draw your cause.
  • How have contraceptives changed your life?

So, dear reader, how would you answer any/all of the cards above?

Sunday Snapshots – The Sci Fi Edition

EMP Sci Fi sign by Tommia Wright

The following shots were from the lower side of the EMP, Icons of Science Fiction. A new exhibit is being assembled in the main floor of the Hall of Fame, so the only space that remained was divided in two: icons and horror. Luckily, the second half wasn’t as horrific as I feared. Granted, there are only a handful of films I had seen and see no reason to add any more from that genre. Hitchcock is supreme in the realm of scream.

I doubt any of these weapons would make it past the TSA let alone any other intergalactic station:

Splendid Saturday!

Jimi Hendrix at the EMP by Tommia Wright

Fun is a day in the city. Splendid is a day in the city with friends!

So where did we venture off to? The Experience Music Project/Science Fiction Hall of Fame!

Granted, the original Jimi Hendrix experience that took up an entire floor has been redone. The jam session rooms are plentiful and extend to an upper level. The Science Fiction Hall of Fame section has shrunk (due to remodeling/setting up the next exhibit, thankfully).

It’s amazing to see what impact the trio had while in London. Then again, to see the impact music has to people is also impressive – and personal.

Despite the changes in layout, options and room to move, it was reassuring to see the “If VI was IX” display in the center:

While at the EMP, I decided to check a couple more items off my ‘silly things list’ – to play the drums and strum a guitar. My friend, V-, and I found an empty jam session room and took turns on the drums, guitar and keyboard for about ten minutes. Things learned – understanding my father’s lament when I had stepped into his guitar at a young age. I strum at equal levels with or without a pick. Drums can be FUN! (And I know I’m ‘too’ old to get a set at this stage in life, but I believe my keyboard has the setting somewhere on the console.

Will this change how I’ll compose additional songs? I don’t know.

I do know that my renewed outlook with music will have me take a closer listen to the songs I sing tomorrow.

What instruments have you picked up lately? What old songs have you found to sing in a new way?

Saturday Snapshots – the Sticky Edition

There are fun things to see and ‘what?’ things to see in almost any place or city. Just beyond the Pike Place Market is the latter, where some folks eagerly add to it or stand beside it with apprehension –

Friday Finds

Top Shelf Chaos by Tommia Wright

Top Shelf Chaos by Tommia Wright

Today’s collection of fun finds includes fascinating factszapping zombies, and a fight for humanity.

The first Mari Collier book I had acquired was “Gather the Children.” Earlier this year, the prequel, “Earthbound” was released. (In between, it was worth breaking down to get a Kindle/pc edition to get “Before We Leave.”) Read  the review and enjoy the recipe Mari shares, too.

I don’t care for zombie-themed stories set to a historical context, however, “Squanto: A Ballad of a Zombie Killer” changed my mind. The story kept my attention throughout and is set up nicely for Volume 2.

Rachel Barnard’s novel, Ataxia and the Ravine of Lost Dreams is a recent discover with a hook that has this reader anxiously getting through the overdue books in order to go through this one uninterrupted.

What fun finds do you have on your reading list?
