Wednesday Words – Judgment Day

Today’s Daily Prompt asks: If you were to judge your favorite book by its cover, would you still read it?

Wandering in the book aisles was the consolation ‘prize’ I had on errands day with my parents as a child. The deal was I was always allowed to get a book. Every time. (Yes, this was how I was spoiled).

Murphy's Boy

Murphy’s Boy

“Murphy’s Boy” caught my attention because of how scared the boy looked. I grabbed it, intent on claiming the book mine, not suspecting it could be deemed ‘over my head.’

That was the first time my father took the book from me and said ‘no.’ He immediately told me to find another while he read the back of the one I had.

Mosquito Coast

Mosquito Coast

“Mosquito Coast” caught my attention, not because I recognized Han Solo ( I didn’t) but because I was curious as to why ‘he went too far.’

After parental approval, I did get to read “Murphy’s Boy.” (One of the rare times we traded ‘swap the books,’ because Dad decided to read both of my choices).

I judged these books by their covers and I’d do it again.

How about you?

Monday Musing – the Stacks Edition

The Stacks by Tommia Wright

The Stacks by Tommia Wright

Found a fascinating blog entry by Ursula K LeGuin at the BookView Café .

The art of accidental discovery. I’ve already shared my (hesitant and sometimes stubborn) views about reading on gadgets and other things. Today’s photo is but half of the borrowed books from the library – the other half tucked behind the first tower, with maybe a book or two at work or in the car or by the keyboard, but I digress.

A few of those books weren’t on my original reading list. I discovered them either through my morning readings, friends’ recommendations or just because I stopped while en route to the book I was supposed to get.

Have you stumbled onto a good read recently by accident?

When was the last time you browsed a bookstore – be it new, used, chain, independent – and found a gem within?

Are you a new or avid user of Goodreads or other online book club lists? Do you subscribe to newsletters with the latest or classic finds? Get together with friends for a book chat?

Do you have a checklist or wishlist you’re working off of or adding to now?

Are you a psalms or hymn or whatever verses kind of reader?

What strategies/trails/strings lead you to the digital book collection  you have now?

This bibliophile would like to know.

Funny, Thought it was…

Spring - 2nd Night by Tommia Wright

Spring – 2nd Night by Tommia Wright

Spring. This wasn’t what I was supposed to be seeing last night. Granted, let the weather detour my evening plans as a couple of inches accumulated on the ground, but that’s beside the point! The calendar said Spring!

Don’t believe the birds were too keen on the change, either.

The only good news was seeing the snow right where it belonged – in the mountains!

In the scheme of things, being mindful of where our treasure truly lies and by whose grace we are saved, this is an excellent point to keep in mind. Thank you for sharing this!

Or my one-word response to today’s Daily Prompt: You’re stranded in a foreign city for a day with no money and no friends. Where do you go; what do you do?

LIBRARY!

No, seriously, I could spend a day in a library (or a church) and feel quite content and safe. Find a few key books on how to say what I need to say, barter for an internet connect and email a note a la ET – “Can’t phone home!” That’s after I’ve read to my heart’s content and explored every level possible.

Thoughtful Stories

Bedtime Story 1 by Tommia Wright

Bedtime Story 1 by Tommia Wright

Today’s Daily Post Prompt, asked, “What was your favorite book as a child? Did it influence the person you are now?

My parents read me bible stories before bed. The original paperback collection of stories now lost, this is the pop-up book my mother read to me frequently – one of a handful of books I secure in my treasure chest. I heard about Jesus’ love for me every night. Sure, there were the Sunday school illustrated readings, but they weren’t books that I could hold with my parents. The memory surrounding this book was that this was the first one my mother took to ‘hiding’ from me when the page/story was done. Oh, how I searched the house high and low! (Well, as high as  a child could within limitations. I never did find out where she hid it!)

It’s wonderful not having to search in vain for His word or love and forgiveness and how He fulfilled the law so perfectly for us.

The other book that filled my imagination was “Enchanted World,” given to me by my aunt. I couldn’t go to many art museums as a child, but to have these masterpieces in my hands inspired me in how I interpreted the world around me. What a wonderful treat it was to catch up with that same aunt in Rome and to see different worldly beauty up close.
