Ficlet Fragment – Flight Risk

Air to Sea by Tommia Wright
Air to Sea by Tommia Wright

Inspired by a contest prompt, this ended up melding with a NaNo project.

Flight Risk

Alven Sydney wandered for almost an hour before he found his runaway. He called his wife from a pay phone, reassuring her that their eldest child was safe – angry, but safe. He watched as the sullen teen made her way from the pier towards the arts center, where she was expected to be, supposedly after working a job that didn’t exist.

“Amelia, I think a different detour might be in order. Don’t worry and don’t wait up.” He paused. “If she’s serious about taking a plunge, maybe I can oblige.”

“The kids would be jealous if they knew,” Amelia told him. “Fine, just don’t get yourself killed.”

Alven made one more call before he returned to the car, pulling up to the front of the center some time later as though nothing was wrong. Alejandra slammed the door with enough force to rattle the glass. “I hate work. That old bat-.”

“What did we say about-?”

“What do you care? You’re only married to my mother and-.” The teenager stopped the moment Alven turned off the radio.

“What have you been doing all this time?”

Alejandra picked at the stickers on her notebook.

He sighed. “ Fine. Tonight, we rewrite the rules,” Alven said. “If you want to jump, let’s make the jump worthwhile, shall we?”

She ignored him, ejecting the disc from the player only to find it blank. “Let me guess, ‘The Chipmunks’ Greatest Hits,’ right?” She spun it about on her finger a few times before returning it, then tapping the ‘play’ button. By the time the various ‘Flight’ symphonies finished, they had arrived at their destination.

Alejandra wrapped her scarf about her. “What-?”

Alven stretched himself slowly. “Didn’t you say you wanted to know what it was like to free fall?”

She shoved her hands into her coat pockets. “Dad ordered me never to jump out of a plane, not that Mom will let me take lessons.”

“Wrong. You have money enough for-.”

“I don’t want you paying for it, though. My dream, my savings.”

Alven nodded. “Fair enough.” He led the way to a tall, nondescript, windowless building, holding the door open for her before she could read the cardboard sign.

“Don’t expect me to be the miller’s daughter and spin straw into gold.”

“Then don’t expect me to be some boring professor who has only lived life through books. Let’s go. Bruce is expecting us.”

Three flights later, Alejandra’s eyes opened wide as she stood at the edge of the wind tunnel below, Bruce waiting for them nearby. “You’re afraid of heights. You’ve always said-.”

Alven said. “Here’s the deal – I jump; you talk. You up for the risk, or not?”

After the lesson, Alejandra dared to take the plunge.

Seven Days

Little Lotto by Tommia Wright
Little Lotto by Tommia Wright

In response to the Daily Post’s challenge of: You wake up tomorrow morning to find all your plans have been cancelled for the next seven days and $10,000 on your dresser. Tell us about your week.

Really? No work-week plans to finalize, criticize, analyze and synthesize? Oh to dare to dream! (I know of one person who is laughing at my current balance of time-off and the fact I’m still working on taking more than one day off here and there, but I digress.)

What to do, what to do….

Train Trip! Visit a bookworm friend in Oregon, a writing friend or two in California. Dare to scuba-dive snorkel along the coast. Catch up with church family in Arizona and Colorado, enjoy service and a bible study or two. Spend a day hiking where I’ve never hiked before (all right, that map is large, but then so are my possibilities), explore a new cave or cavern.

Then there’s the ‘have camera will shoot’ approach of visiting different museums, finding a market to explore, a play to see, a library to wander through (honestly have yet to ever take a trip where I didn’t detour into a library).

No mini-escape would be complete without touching base with family and exploring someplace new.

Hmm, some of those wish-list items could be doable… Might have to take some serious time to compile sometime more than the “50 Things to Do” list I sent off to Art House Co-op….

Tuesday Tunes

Make Mine Music by Tommia Wright

Make Mine Music by Tommia Wright

It was a toss-up between focusing on marches (given the month) or just seeing where the muse led me. So, one of each today:

I remember whistling this song when I was young, completely clueless about the movie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CB8F8g1-4Uw. Having seen Bridge on the River Kwai at last, it has new meaning.

The original version of this song was moving, and that was before I was told it was for a soundtrack for some vampire movie (?). The Piano Guys’ rendition of it is equally enjoyable (as all of their songs are). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgaTQ5-XfMM Debating whether to break the self-imposed $30 ticket limit to see them in concert…

Those are two tunes stuck in my mind at the moment. What are your current ‘earworms?’

Monday Meanderings

March of the Droids by Tommia Wright

March of the Droids by Tommia Wright

So, Winnie dared me to admit details of my ‘space cadet weekend.’ Well, for the second time (and going two days this time), I went to Emerald City ComiCon. The media guest list was impressive, so for two days, I indulged in listening to:

* Christopher Lloyd

* Chris Sarandon

*Felicia Day and Wil Wheaton

* Patrick Stewart

Like any convention I’ve attended, my mind’s spinning on possible characters and stories based on what was shared. From starts into acting, various projects of old, upcoming projects due, etc., it was enjoyable to hear their stories.

I did dare explore the gaming level of the convention – granted, most of it was foreign to me as I am primarily a strategy/computer game player. The details of the artwork, the involvement of the games, pieces and backgrounds was interesting.

The comic book level (the main portion of the show) allowed me to see artists at work, see panels created, get a personal request done (given the invitation to offer a ‘dare.’), and meet some jewelers, too.

Aside from the Sketchbook Project, my drawing skills are mostly from the Stick Figure School of Art.  But given the range of talent seen, I might try the impossible.

Young Jedi vs. Darth Maul

Young Jedi vs. Darth Maul

Some folks take their costuming skills seriously and that alone was spectacular to see. Who knew there were so many Dr. Who’s? (that’s a whole other post, since I’ve yet to see an ep or read a book involving the Tardis-traveler.) Star Trek, Star Wars, many a given sci-fi show and movie, with plenty of steampunk and aliens in the mix. My definition of ‘geek-dom’ is my Star Trek Academy polo shirt.

Batman and Two Robins

It was nice to meet some authors with their debut novels. While logic screamed ‘just keep walking,’ spare change proclaimed, ‘oh, maybe one or two (try three) books.’

Will I go again next year? Most likely. Did I have fun chatting with other geeks/nerds? Of course!

What guilty pleasure excursion do you enjoy?

Sunday Snapshots – Wanderer’s Edition

I was torn between “sensible” and “silly” today, leaning towards the former, will probably add more to the latter. The day in the city was great fun and am preparing to go back again (Emerald City ComiCon – what can I say, I’m a space cadet).

So, here are a few more shots from Friday:

March of the Pigs

Painted Pig at the Market by Tommia Wright

Painted Pig at the Market by Tommia Wright

Today’s National Pig Day. Only reason I knew that was starting the day on a trivial search. (It pays to play hooky from work once in a while.)

So, today’s ficlet/fragment has nothing to do with the NaNo’s or anything else in progress. Only a five-minute rambling, inspired by a stroll through the market.

To Market, What Market?

Why was it always his turn to go to market? Week in and week out, the only one tasked with the chore, like he was nominated to be ‘first pig’ instead of first born. What was wrong with going to the zoo, the aquarium, or the deli for a roast beef sandwich instead?

On second thought, what was wrong with staying home, with jam and bread? No, that was not his lot in life.

Grabbing his coat, he muttered to himself, ‘To market, to market, like a fat pig. Then home again, broke again, oh jolly fig.’ What nonsense, what strife.

Golden Pig by Tommia Wright

Then again, maybe he’d be lucky and strike it rich? Meet someone with the Midas touch, without the paralyzing glitch.

Who was he kidding? He knew the score. It was his job to be the caretaker, provider, not the boar.

Today could be different, today could be grand. After all, there was enough allowance in place to still avoid spam.
