Saturday Snapshots – Rainy Day

???????????????????????????????

Falling

One of the best things about the fall

Aside from the cascading leaves from wooden walls

Is the way the rain pours to clean it all

The mugginess of summer, before winter’s call

Rain3

Clear Curtains

Forget the intricate patterns of lace,

Or the silky sheen drapes all over the place

Give me a rain-soaked day to brighten my face.

The other side of the walls to see his grace.

Wednesday Words – Banned Books

Kit/Kat Owner's Corner (part-time) by Tommia Wright

Kit/Kat Owner’s Corner (part-time) by Tommia Wright

This is Banned Books Week.

Everyone should treat themselves to the following from Random House Publishing: “Censorship causes Blindness. Read!

There was only one time I was told ‘no’ about a book. After parental review, I read the book I wanted. It baffles me how there are some who still believe they have the right to restrict access to certain materials because they don’t care for them.

In one of the few newsstand stores in Denver, there was a splendid poster behind the register: If everyone had banned what they didn’t like to read, here is what is left. (The space above was blank.)

Today, I challenge you to find a book from any of the lists and read it. Or better yet, I would wager that you have a title or two (or few) already on your shelf.

Tuesday Tunes Day – “Please Don’t Sell the Piano”

Today is “National Cherries Jubilee Day.” Not that I’ve tried the treat or have interest in it.

It’s National Piano Month, and while I have my favorite players (to be shared at some point), I did stumble upon this piece and can relate.

The piano I had needed to be sold, small as it was, because it wouldn’t fit into the space we were moving to. True, I hadn’t taken as many years in lessons as some classmates and I was (and am) still sheet-music dependent while playing by ear, but the lessons Mrs. H.W. taught me stayed with me.

When I moved to Colorado (joining choir before joining church one wonderful weekend), the first thing I splurged on (jobless, so definitely foolish) was a keyboard at Costco. I was able to practice the music outside of the weekly sessions. I was able to practice songs long forgotten.

Have I played it as often now as I did then? Not exactly. Am I going to sell it anytime soon? Not on your life.

Sunday Snapshot – Block Party Edition

The Market's Stand

The Market’s Stand

Centre Street closed as rows and rows

Of indoor vendors  joined others outdoors

From the local market and library,

Artists, beaders, candy makers and many

Offered their wares to the visitors plenty.

The day went by fast, as different musicians blast

Their songs of old and new.

A good day it was, accompanied with a good strong brew.

Saturday Snapshot

Fireplace in the Woods

Fireplace in the Woods

Placing Fire in the Woods

Is there a place out in the woods

Where worries, annoyances, nuances burn?

Where frustration returns to a state of faith?

Where certain things go the way of the wraith?

Is there a place out in the woods

That allows a bird to perch, a fawn to yearn?

That allows a safe haven from mankind’s madness?

That returns to the time of little childhood sadness?

Is there a place out in the woods

When peace and rest are finally earned?

When no further generation must foot the bill?

When endless noise ceases and time stands still?

Part of Fast Company’s “Creation Stories,” – Rick Gervis shares how he learned to write.

How about you? What prompted you to put pen/pencil to paper, to string strong scenes of storytelling?

If you haven’t read “Out Children are not Our Children” by Kevin Brennan, you should. The tiny tales are worth the time!
