Thursday Thought

Innocent Mint by Tommia Wright

Innocent Mint by Tommia Wright

Today’s “Sneak Some Zucchini on Your Neighbor’s Porch Day.” I think I’ll pass because:

a) the elk claimed the starts of the zucchini,

b) the neighbors on either side of me don’t have a porch and

c) of the surviving plants I can grow – read, haven’t died yet via me, the elk, the deer, the cats or anything bordering on herbicide or worse – I’d probably share the mint.

It’s wonderful to see the mint surviving after all this time when it was first brought back from my grandparents’ place. The scent brings many summers back on comfortable days such as these, especially time spent their garden.

Each day brought with it the selection of fruit for breakfast along the property’s border, the picking and slicing of vegetables for lunch, and the decisions to be made of what baked delight would be had from the raspberries overflowing the strainer. The zucchini was fair game for any meal of the day – bread being best, sauteed being second and thin ‘chips’ being third.

Of gifts to give, plants are best, I think. There’s the chance of them returning year after year, a better reminder of the gift giver than fallen petals from cut flowers past their prime.

Two quotes to ponder:

“The most beautiful discovery true friends make is that they can grow separately without growing apart.” ~ Elisabeth Foley

” True friendship is a plant of slow growth and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity before it is entitled to the appellation.” ~ George Washington

What ways do you find yourself transported to more pleasant memories?

Ficlet Fragment: Today

Clutered by Tommia Wright

Clutered by Tommia Wright

Today’s ficlet comes courtesy of the Daily Prompt: Walking down the street, you encounter a folded piece of paper on the sidewalk. You pick it up and read it and immediately, your life has changed. Describe this experience.

Today

Royce Roberts stretched for the piece of paper that fell to the ground, elbow and shoulder popping in lieu of knees. The nonstandard quality of the paper made for sharp corners, one that dug under the surface of Royce’s fingernail, right to the quick. He muttered just as he bit down on the finger to stop the bleeding. It wasn’t in time to keep the white surface free of red specks that now smudged over the first half of the addressee’s name.

Wiping away the droplets with his free hand, he felt the remains of the drink make its way up the back of his throat. Middle finger still in his mouth, he clenched the remaining four fingers of his other hand, as he forced the bile down, willing the anger he felt to evaporate the bitter brew along with the virulent news in his hand.

The last time Cary Joyce Roberts opened such a mailing, it had cost him his legs, birthed a life based on a lie, and killed any hopes to keep the family together.

Staring down at the illegible initials, there was a fifty-fifty chance that Royce’s time had come or worse – Gail Julia’s calling would kill them all.

(Another piece of the story may be found here.)

Toe-Tapping Tuesday

Torn Exposure by Tommia Wright

Torn Exposure by Tommia Wright

It’s toe-tapping Tuesday. Well, actually, it’s ‘Wiggle Your Toes Day,’ so I guess that could count, too.

It’s official. I’ve gone and done it. While I had hoped to wait for the first day of the festival to make the confession, certain timelines (and timekeepers) informed me I have to should do otherwise….

I published a book.

The earlier ramblings of water-themed books that became a sketchbook have gone and become a book. (How is that for an odd cycle of water?)

Reflections_on_Water_Cover_for_Kindle

The Sketchbook 2012 Project (Forgotten Water Falls) is emerging as a collection of poems and photos just in time for the debut of (drum roll, please….)

Monday Moment

Kit Kat Breaktime by Tommia Wright

Kit Kat Breaktime by Tommia Wright

Today is “National Work-Like-a-Dog Day.” Really? If I were to do that -using my canines as an example – I’d be in a similar repose state as Kit and Kat here. (The only reason the dogs aren’t shot shown is because they seem to have a sixth sense about such things – running/hiding when it comes to shots, shavings, scoldings, etc.)

There is something to be said for a work-life balance. The other day, I overheard someone say they were making an appointment to play. I had to think about that, given the juxtaposition of the phrase. It almost tied with an oft-used expression I had during Russian studies – “I’ll work at playing more.” This expression led to a больное плечо ( bol’noye plecho) from Nadia. Yes, sore shoulders from repeated punches made for a sudden drop of the slip of the tongue, but I digress.

There was an interesting article in the USA Today about countries with the most vacation days. How to interpret the numbers is up to the reader. But it begs the question – are we a majority that prefers to ‘work like a dog,’ (versus workaholics who may or may not work hard, depending on the person) or do we value our freedom to step back once in a while and be grateful for what we have?

Diversity

Forget the standings, the statuses, the stations

Look beyond the borders, the language barriers of every nation

The differences among the many souls

Means different means of reaching a goal.

Saturday Snapshot – Smoky Edition

Fire on the Mountain by Tommia Wright

Fire on the Mountain by Tommia Wright

Hard to believe the fire was only a week ago yesterday. Amazing how much damage can be done by human carelessness.

What was caused by the thoughtless was taken care of by the fearless. Thankfully, a dedicated team of fire fighters put an end to it in a few days time – no homes threatened, no lives lost.

The same can’t be said for some of the other fires in other locations. May the rains fall soon to cool things down, to put fires out.

What actions have you seen that showed the awful side of humanity? What heroic stories have you seen, heard or care to share?

Thoughtful Thursday

highlight

Today was a great day. When the opportunity arises to meet students eager to learn, listen, lead and lend their energy to create such a synergy, one can’t help but leave the break in the routine with a smile.*

Add to that, just barely crossing the finish line last night for Camp NaNo/July Session, this month is beginning on a ‘whew/eek!’ note.

The first of August already, and on the trivial collection of things, it’s also:

Admit You’re Happy Month*
Family Fun Month
National Catfish Month
National Eye Exam Month
National Golf Month
Peach Month
Romance Awareness Month
Water Quality Month
National Picnic Month

To break down the weeks, the four themes are:
Week 1 National Simplify your Life Week
Week 2 National Smile Week
Week 3 Friendship Week
Week 4 Be Kind to Humankind Week

The first week will be an interesting challenge. (Slowing down will probably be key). Already a head start on week two.

What challenges are you setting, if any?
