Today’s Daily Prompt: What’s the most significant secret you’ve ever kept? Did the truth ever come out?
Let’s just say that my brother and I believe in keeping the other one safe. That and my boss at the time was the one who encouraged and enabled me to do what I did. It involved a ‘minor white lie’ that my parents still don’t know to this day. If they did, my traveling days would be finished and I’d be like Rapunzel – on the inside looking out.
When I went to New York City for an adventurous weekend, of course my family wanted to know who I was meeting up with. I told them, two friends I had known during college. Didn’t say we ever took a class together….or that we were even in the same state – emailing, chat groups, etc was how we three met, and had planned ‘corner state trips’ to include Washington and California, but alas, life had other plans. My boss knew; my brother knew. I knew (in my gut) these two could be trusted for a weekend of exploration and adventure. They have since gotten married (smile).
JulieyouJest gifted me with two award nominations during the “Blogging from A to Z” blitz, and I’m very humbled: The Liebster Blogger Award and the Very Inspiring Blogger Award.
We discovered each other’s blogs during the whirlwind month and I must say that Julie’s is a fantastic, splendid read!! I’d turn around and nominate her for each of these awards if I could get away with it!
This is the second Liebster Award, so you may have seen the rules for it before:
I’ve only seen “Blink,” so I can’t comment (nor can I look at gargoyles the same way again). Otherwise, I’m quite content with Star Trek:TNG.
2. Coffee or Tea? – Tea
3. Why did you start blogging?
To share photos, stories and other fun finds.
4. What superpower do you wish you possessed? Why?
Super memory or speed writing that’s legible, just so I can try to keep up with the thoughts in my head.
5. Do you have any gnomes in your yard? Do they come alive at night and try to steal your medication like they do at my house? If not, who is your favorite fictional character? Why?
(In order) No; no – they’re robots, hence my signing up for Old Glory Insurance; Lennie Briscoe/Jack McCoy/Anita Van Buren – because they enforce law and order.
6. Movies or Books? Books
7. What would be your weapon of choice for the Zombie Apocalypse?
A Zombie Apocalypse expert equivalent to Dr. Alan Grant? If not that, then maybe a shovel.
8. Are you a Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, or Charlotte? I don’t know what the male equivalent to the Sex in the City characters are so, what TV character best describes you?
Which one is clueless, because I have no idea what this show is about.
9. Describe a brief embarrassing memory (I had to, y’all<-Julie’s!).
Giving the wrong greeting while working at a second retail store for the day. The fact that it was my boss of the first store I worked at calling – bad. The fact it happened twice, in reverse doubly bad.
10. Have you ever been or are you now a vegan?
Only during summertime visits at the grandparents farm. Seriously – fresh vegetables just a sunflower’s reach away? What more would you have to make room for?
11. Which John Hughes (any director is fine) movie best describes your adolescence? Why? Breakfast Club with the cliques/fitting in. Adulthood – Ferris Buller’s Day Off.
My 11 questions:
For the Very Inspiring Rules:
The rules are as follows:
1. Link back to the person who gave you the award. Http://Julieyoujest.com
2. State 7 things about yourself.
My favorite challenges:
3. Nominate 15 other bloggers for this award and link back to them.
Discoveries during the A-to-Z challenge:
Thank you again, Julie!
1 Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
2 Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—
3 who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,
4 who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion,
5 who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
6 The Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed.
7 He made known his ways to Moses, his deeds to the people of Israel:
8 The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.
9 He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever;
10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him;
12 as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;
14 for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.
15 The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field;
16 the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more.
17 But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children—
18 with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts.
19 The Lord has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.
20 Praise the Lord, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word.
21 Praise the Lord, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will.
22 Praise the Lord, all his works everywhere in his dominion.
Praise the Lord, my soul.

Today’s ficlet is inspired by today’s Daily Prompt: Describe a little thing — one of the things you love that defines your world but is often overlooked.
While there are many great posts to the point, here’s my rambling rendition of what matters to me – in a manner of speaking….
Words, Words, Words
Dora slammed the book shut, her face scrunched up like Grampa’s after Aunt Heloise’s turn to cook dinner. She jumped when her dad tapped her on the shoulder.
“What’s wrong,” he asked, joining her on the floor in what little space hadn’t been occupied by dolls, bears and other ‘listeners.’
Her overgrown bangs covered her eyes; her arms flapping like the birds she had been reading about a moment before. “The teacher says some of the words I say are too big for me.”
“What words?”
Dora shared the story she told during show and tell. Nana and Grampa liked it and so did her cousin. Her father gave her that look she liked – not one of anger, sadness or disappointment, but a…pensive look. That was the one!
“You are very smart, Dorinda,” he told her. “You see, hear and say words that others don’t – not yet, anyway. That isn’t bad. You’re…an early bloomer with the beauty of language.”
Dora flopped forward, mimicking the posture of her Raggedy Anne doll. “Don’t you get sad, not hearing me?”
He smiled. “Some days. However, we talk, every day, and that is what I love. Remember, words are important. Choose them well.”
“Like at school,” she asked, wishing she and her cousin were in the same class because that teacher was nice. Her father nodded. “So, I can’t say…’super-.’ I can’t say…’supercalif-.’” She gave up; her father smiled.
Dora repeated what her father said, counting on her fingers as she did so. “You can’t touch words or taste them.” She felt smart about that point, certain he’d be impressed.
Instead, her father stretched out on the floor like her, looking silly because he seemed to curl up like the stuffed snake and squid she had. He spelled out, ‘l-o-v-e,’ while he whispered the word. Dora squinted, knowing what she read, seeing what he said, surprised at what she heard.
“Love,” she repeated. “There’s no taste to that,” she told him, wondering how silly he was going to get.
He spelled out, ‘h-a-t-e,’ while he whispered the word. She repeated it back to him, and then frowned.
“No, you can’t taste them, not like lollipops or popsicles.” Her father didn’t give her the answer right away; he seldom did. Maybe that was why Dora wanted her cousin’s teacher, too – because she was like that, too, like Sylvia.
“My teacher wants to talk to you tomorrow,” she mumbled, reaching for Raggedy Anne and Mr. Squid. Her father moved the toys from her hands and had her repeat the message.
“That’s fine,” he told her. “Now what’s wrong?”
“I’m mad.” Dora heard him sigh as he sat up, not irritated like Grampa would be or impatient like Aunt Heloise. Dora didn’t want to say she was sad, too. Sad and afraid that she’d be told to stop with learning her words at home, told to stop reading Austin, Bronte and Carroll with her family, or Bible stories or Shakespeare stories written just for her.
“Don’t be mad,” he told her before pulling her onto his lap. “We can solve this puzzle, too.”
She believed him.
Mr. Rogers. Not much more needs to be said for the start of this month’s (targeted) theme.
Another point to ponder, from SnoValley Writes!: “Write to be understood, speak to be heard, read to grow…”~ Lawrence Clark Powell
What is in the garden of your mind? What readings are you enjoying that are contributing to your growth?
Today’s Daily Prompt asks, “To what extent is your blog a place for your own self-expression and creativity vs. a site designed to attract readers? How do you balance that? If sticking to certain topics and types of posts meant your readership would triple, would you do it?”
Well, let’s see…my reason for the tablet is primarily my play space and then the hopes of entertaining/enlightening readers and passersby. If I were to lean towards one way or the other…I’d say play space, personal discoveries, markers met, etc. in the hopes that the fun, fascinating finds might pique the interests of a few (or many – I’ll stick to my numerous claims of not knowing how to count (smile)).
To get through the “Blogging from A to Z” for the first time, I thought a ‘routine’ would be sane. My hat’s off to those who found ways to do double-duty of their regular routine *and* the A-to-Z line. I enjoyed my ‘groove’ of the Monday-to-Friday lineup here and my Camp NaNoWriMo snippet shares here. Oh, and add writings for NaPoMo (the collection to be posted later)… During this adventurous month, I was pleasantly surprised to gain some readers, some followers and an award nomination – thank you, Julie! To sum up the month – 60+ A-to-Z posts, 50,557 words on the novel, 30 poems and a mind spinning as fast as the wheel above (well, imagination required to place that back into the water pumps by the Falls and then the standstill – smile).
As for new bloggers read and found …about 150. New fun finds to follow….quite a few!
**Belated Addition** Thanks to the commenters for their enlightening insights re: the Questionable post. I did learn a lot about the purpose of the challenge and different takes on it from those who have done this before! Since this was my first time through, the only thing I could think of changing would be an easier way to navigate the Blogger sites to leave comments – half of them were reader/commenter friendly, others added to my bookmark collection. Otherwise, discovered many new blogs to read/follow. So that would be the chief takeaway from this fascinating challenge that I’ll probably sign up for again next year. ****
Would I focus on only certain things to triple the number of readers? I don’t think so – not if I were true to myself in creating what interests me, sharing things I enjoy and following whichever way the Muse takes me. If one favorite topic were to offend and suggestions made that I drop it (say the Snapshots or Psalms), I couldn’t,wouldn’t do it.
for the A-to-Z challenge. Yes, I stretched it a bit. Took a bit of a twist with a ‘zig’ on the name, a ‘zag’ on a funk band’s turn towards swing, and a ‘zing’ of a standard.
