Blog Award

One Lovely Blog AwardThank you, Mike – author of Eye Dancers – for the nomination of the One Lovely Blog award.

The rules for One Lovely Blog Award are very straightforward:  thank the blogger who nominated you and link the post to their page, and then state 7 random facts about yourself and nominate those you feel are deserving of the award.

Mike’s The Eye Dancers caught my attention during one of those browsing days, the book already on my digital bookshelf. The blog is a wonderful read that I recommend, if you’re not reading it already.

Seven random facts?

  • Josephine Tey is my inspiration in writing – her way with description is a delight.
  • Torey L. Hayden is the only author I have in my collection that isn’t missing a title.
  • I dared to learn four years’ worth of Russian in two years after a year of teaching ESL (and because the Cyrillic alphabet was unfamiliar to me).
  • I learned a few Italian curse words from my aunt while in Rome – not that we admitted that to either of our parents.
  • I have yet to tour Underground Seattle.
  • Even though I live close to the coast, I’ve a fear of drowning, despite swimming lessons decades ago – not that I’ll let that stop me learning how to snorkel.
  • A few key things get me through the day – the devotional reading, family and friends, music and a heartfelt laugh before nightfall.

Awkward

Awkward by Tommia Wright

Awkward by Tommia Wright

Today’s prompt is: Do you feel like you “get” social media, or do you just use it because that’s where all your friends and family are?

Allow me to borrow from a great sci fi show -“To boldly go where no one has gone before…”

Yeah, not quite there. If you were to ask me five years ago if I’d have a blog, I’d ask why? If you were to ask me about: Twitter, Tumblr, LinkenIn, Live Journal or Google+, it would be the same answer. And yet, I’ve boldly entered those last five realms just a bit ago. (The last one ‘kicking and screaming’ according to the one who threw me the line, but I digress.)

Some are rather enjoyable, others entertaining and others educational. I almost have a routine down – almost.

Most folks I talk to like/have/love Facebook. I won’t go there. Yes, I realize I make it ‘that much harder’ to get the latest photos and news, too bad. I’ll maintain that strand of stubbornness along with other items.

Do I know what I’m doing? OH, NO!

But, that’s another story.

Aiming High

Eagles Wings by Shane Garrett

Eagles Wings by Shane Garrett

Aiming high – why or why
When I know I’ll always fall short of the sky?
I’ve been called on it once or twice –
The delivery sometimes anything but nice.
And yet I refuse to lower the bar,
Determined to push myself (too?) far.
Go ahead and tell me ‘perfect score’
(My inner voice will whisper ‘more’).
It isn’t the Tower of Babel I climb.
I only need to focus on Him, His love divine.

Oddly

Organized Chaos by Tommia Wright

Organized Chaos by Tommia Wright

Today’s Daily Prompt asks “Does a messy home (or office) make you anxious and cranky, or is cleaning something you just do before company comes over?”

That depends. Given that on sunny days, I’m outside more than inside, I don’t notice the state of the floor. The only time I’ll admit to getting cranky is when I’ve put something away someplace I wouldn’t lose it only to have little recollection of where that was – and that’s when there’s a deadline attached.

The joke used to be: “If the desk was clean, the house was a mess; if the desk was a mess, the house was clean.” The students knew this, along when to be mindful during finals. Good news about that silliness was a roommate who had a similar challenge (and profession) as me. Rather than deciding who was “Felix” and who was “Oscar,” we admitted to being both, depending on the circumstances and the season.

As for cleaning, I enjoy it – it can be rather therapeutic. Purging is a good thing.

Given that I seldom entertain, the notion of ‘cleaning before company arrives’ is rare, not that the loft is completely lost – I know where most things are at, really. But, I can make things presentable in short order if needed. In the meantime, I’m prime in piling, supreme in stacking and better at boxing than I let on.

Are you an “Oscar” or “Felix” or do you have a happy medium?

What, the Peep?

Ducky Devilish Sticky/Logic by Tommia Wright

Ducky Devilish Sticky/Logic by Tommia Wright

I should have known better. When someone mentioned they had dark chocolate available, with only a Peep attached to it, I should have left well enough alone.

I have only had one other dealing with peeps and should have kept it at that. Not that I was in the creative mood to enter the contest this year since I’m insanely trying other things so far.

No – I dared to eat a Peep – chocolate and all.

The texture does not come close to a marshmallow at all. At least one knows what to expect with a marshmallow – the consistent softness, the fluidity of sweetness that melts in your mouth properly.

With this ‘doesn’t it look cute’ shape of…I think it was a duck…  I went from chocolate to supposed marshmallow to brittle sugar that felt worse than a mouthful of sand. Rather than it dissolving, the peep morphed into something grittier, nastier and harder to get rid of. And  this was just the beak! All the while, those around me kept saying how they had wonderful memories of this treat, how they were making plans to finish a package or two or three – wee!

What – the peep?!?

I finished the whole thing, the chocolate long forgotten and sorely missed, the wishful visit to a dentist spinning in the back of my mind – at least that level of torment makes sense and has a clean, healthy result.

The peep? Given the influx of sugar in my system, the rest of my morning did not bode well – hands shaking, vision askew, words misheard, and my talking a hundred miles a minute versus the usual 1 mpm. (It didn’t help me that I forgot to eat breakfast that day and a cup of tea only takes you so far). Five bottles of water, four teas and two oranges later – followed by a small lunch – I think I was closer to normal.

Then I was told the ‘abnormal fact’ – peeps do best with those under the age of eight. Great. I’m older than that; should have been smarter than that; certainly shouldn’t have tried that peep.

It will be my one and only, another silly item to check off the list of ‘first time/last time’ items.

What discoveries have you made lately?

Saturday Snapshots – the Park Edition

A sunny day brings about challenges of finding an uncrowded park. A mid-afternoon stroll led me to a relatively quiet place for a spell.

Thought for Thursday

Praying Hands by Tommia Wright

Praying Hands by Tommia Wright

Maundy Thursday, that is. An evening where a regular meal takes a different turn, a sacrament that nourishes our souls. Listening to the songs of the season, there is a reminder that He who lived a perfect life for us was preparing for the final offering to redeem us.

It is because of Jesus’ life, death on the cross and resurrection, that we –through Him alone, may appear before God.
