Kaleidoscope

a-to-z-letters-kKismet and Kaleidoscopes – two fun toys of youth.

With kismet, the chance to find something to score with in a rolls of chance made counting and pattern-finding fun. There were more options with Kismet than Yahtzee.

Kaleidoscopes made for a fun, colorful way to look at the world. Still trying to decide how to make one.

In  the meantime, here’s the only ‘odd shot’ of the two items of play:

Justice

a-to-z-letters-jA poem, a reading, a collection of verses pertaining to “justice” –

(Definition from m-w.com, poem from poets.org, article from Center Without Walls and verses from the KJV)

While Writing –  by Noelle Kocot

Someone inside says, "Get busy."
But I've got appointments to keep,
I have an abstemious love of equations calculated quickly
While the tepid day melts into design.

And the high cheekbones of the beautiful life
Bear the loose look of a calendar by lamplight.
I search for patterns in everything.
I am tied in knots of comprehension.

I think, how useful it might be
To pierce all the hands of the earth
With an oath of pins encircling snarling planets
But talent and shallowness sewn together

Is nothing but a kerchief tied around a survivalist's head,
And it helps to know the feet wriggling through a hole
In the universe will land for an instant
Upon the cushions of the dark,

And that after marching one doozy of a kilometer after another,
We each come upon the same poem scribbled in invisible ink
Taped to the door of a room
In which an austere justice is burning for us.

Worth Reading – Social Justice in Jazz

Worth Noting-

Ecclesiastes 3:17 – I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for [there is] a time there for every purpose and for every work.

Psalms 58:11 – So that a man shall say, Verily [there is] a reward for the righteous: verily he is a God that judgeth in the earth.

Psalms 7:6 – Arise, O LORD, in thine anger, lift up thyself because of the rage of mine enemies: and awake for me [to] the judgment [that] thou hast commanded.

John 3:16 – For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.Luke 15:7 – I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance.

Luke 6:37 – Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven.

Wednesday Words – Imagination

a-to-z-letters-iThere is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.” ~Rod Serling

Today’s “Wednesday Words” will take an audio detour, beginning with imagination,  inspiration and infinite possibilities.

Yes, it’s possible to pick up any sci-fi classic or contemporary story. But when was the last time you let the storyteller take you away?

  • Alien Voices was put together by Leonard Nimoy and John DeLancie. Focusing on the classics, they assembled a stellar cast to bring the stories to life the way radio dramas did. If you chance to listen to War of the Worlds, it comes with an original ‘sequel’ co-written by DeLancie.
  • Seeing Ear Theatre, an off-shoot of SciFi (before the change to…yet to be determined), offered a combination of classics and contemporary stories as well – Octavia Butler, Neil Gaiman, Kim Stanley Robinson. Each story was performed by a full cast.
  • The Twilight Zone Radio Dramas is a definite delight to take you to another dimension.

For an inspiring story, treat yourself to:

As for infinite possibilities – that’s where the joy of the local library comes in – between CDs and cassettes to borrow (if they can still be found),  to preloaded players of popular titles, to downloads available for the taking – courtesy of Overdrive.

Let your imagination soar, your spirits lifted or catch up on your studies, laughs or what have you.

By George…

a-to-z-letters-gosh, by golly, by gee, by George, by green…

Torn between the Daily Prompt: For many of us, winter is blooming into spring, or fall hardening into winter. Which season do you most look forward to?

and the regular rambling (George Eliot, George Burns and George Gershwin).

First things first – Fall and Spring are my favorites – the blanket of colors to enjoy on a walk:

Fall's Carpet by Tommia Wright

Fall’s Carpet by Tommia Wright

or the emerging colors of spring surrounded by the greenery:

Flowers at the Falls 2 by Tommia Wright

Flowers at the Falls 2 by Tommia Wright

Then again, could go with the following quote by George Eliot:

“If youth is the season of hope, it is often so only in the sense that our elders are hopeful about us; for no age is so apt as youth to think its emotions, partings, and resolves are the last of their kind.”

Or this poem from poets.org:

Green

by D. H. Lawrence

The dawn was apple-green,
The sky was green wine held up in the sun,
The moon was a golden petal between.

She opened her eyes, and green
They shone, clear like flowers undone
For the first time, now for the first time seen.

What is your favorite season?

Sunday Psalm – 118

Flowers at the Falls 1The beautiful thing about the psalms is the powerful, illustrative messages shared in melodic poetry.

Thursday’s and Friday’s daily devotion I received in my email focused on Psalm 118. A reminder of where our strength comes from – not from ourselves, but from God, who is all powerful.

Many of the psalms carry that message. What psalms do you turn to for strength, guidance and assurance?

Some wonderful hymns are based on this psalm:

(Posted copy below courtesy of the site “The Official King James Version Online.

1 O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever.

2 Let Israel now say, that his mercy endureth for ever.

3 Let the house of Aaron now say, that his mercy endureth for ever.

4 Let them now that fear the LORD say, that his mercy endureth for ever.

5 I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, and set me in a large place.

6 The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?

7 The LORD taketh my part with them that help me: therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me.

8 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.

9 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.

10 All nations compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD will I destroy them.

11 They compassed me about; yea, they compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.

12 They compassed me about like bees; they are quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.

13 Thou hast thrust sore at me that I might fall: but the LORD helped me.

14 The LORD is my strength and song, and is become my salvation.

15 The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly.

16 The right hand of the LORD is exalted: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly.

17 I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD.

18 The LORD hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death.

19 Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the LORD:

20 This gate of the LORD, into which the righteous shall enter.

21 I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation.

22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.

23 This is the LORD’S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.

24 This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

25 Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity.

26 Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.

27 God is the LORD, which hath shewed us light: bind the sacrifice with cords, even unto the horns of the altar.

28 Thou art my God, and I will praise thee: thou art my God, I will exalt thee.

29 O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

Encouragement

a-to-z-letters-e(“There are three kinds of people in this world – those who can count and those who cannot.” – a joke told by an elementary teacher)

Today’s Daily Prompt states “Tell us about another blogger who has influenced your own online journey.

One? Really? Well, there are two bloggers who have been the trailblazers for me, for their variety of topics, their exploration into new formats and never  holding back who they are:

Jackie Fedyk is the one who told me “Of course you can blog! Anyone can!” So, I followed her lead. Where I was hesitant, she was daring; where I questioned, she shared answers.

Casondra Brewster is the one who keeps repeating the statement “Your writing shouldn’t stay in a shoebox! Get it out there for the world to see!” I continue to follow the lines she throws my way (yes, this includes stumbling my way through Google+ and the like).

Two great role-models, writers, artists and  most importantly, friends who offer encouragement and entertainment every time in need.

Who has encouraged and influenced your online journey?

Dreaming

a-to-z-letters-dDreams. Some tempt you to stay asleep. Others jar you from repose. And others dissipate before a single thread could be grasped.

A rambling list of things pertaining to dreams because I foolishly set myself up for too little sleep (again) having lost myself in reading (again). The last time this happened, I picked up a copy of Stephen King’s “Insomnia” to read where I promptly dropped off before the end of chapter one. To this day, I still don’t know what the rest of the story’s about.

Movies

  • Dreamscape. The saving grace of that film: Dennis Quaid’s character overcoming his fears. Didn’t help that those fears became mine for some time to come.
  • A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Only saw this movie recently while going through my David Strathairn list. Not a bad film. Not a ‘must have.’ Actually, can’t recall if there really is a Shakespeare to film that is worth having…
  • Field of Dreams. Only one of the best baseball films ever! I mean, it had James Earl Jones in it! And it was on par with the enjoyment of the book.
  • What Dreams May Come. The same haunting feeling that Somewhere in Time had, to see Robin Williams on the quest before him is moving.
  • Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House. Cary Grant and Myrna Loy! A classic example of why some do-it-yourself projects should not exist. I can’t believe someone thought they could remake this gem!

Musically, that list might be a bit long, so here’s the short list, aka my favorites:

  • A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes from Walt Disney’s Cinderella
  • A Kiss to Build a Dream On by Louis Armstrong
  • California Dreamin’ by the Mamas and the Papas
  • Daydream Believer by the Monkees
  • Only in My Dreams by Debbie Gibson
  • Sweet Dreams by The Eurhythmics
  • Sweet Dreams by La Bouche
  • River of Dreams by Billy Joel
  • Rock and Roll Dreams Come True by Meatloaf

and the BEST, motivating dream song: The Impossible Dream sung by Peter O’Toole.

What “Dream Items” are on your mind?

C is for Crime

a-to-z-letters-cFirst thing that came to mind with this letter, originally was “C is for Cookie” and a bratty memory of my youth. Dare I share it, maybe? One of the easiest songs to sing at a young age and a great way to annoy one’s way for a cookie. Yes, I was that kind of child who could kill my parents’ patience, when they baked cookies. I’d sing that song over and over and over again until I got one or they’d send me to the corner bakery with allowance money. The record ‘short count’ was six times. The longest, or the day my mother had extreme patience: twenty.
Someone said there’s such a thing as ‘sweet revenge.’ My parents couldn’t possibly find a way to ‘pay me back for the brattiness,’ could they?

Then I thought I better stay with the routine – books. Today’s theme: Crime. Well, Castle:

Reading the books is like watching a bonus episode during summertime – a treat to see the characters maintain their form from screen to page. I have yet to decide if I’ll finish the tie-ins for “Murder, She Wrote.”

How about you? What’s your favorite criminal read?
