Wednesday Words – ‘Joy’ Edition
Three ‘joy’ful reads to enjoy.
Joy of Cooking -Who didn’t make it through home ec without referencing this book? Still have the same copy, complete with creative bookmarks, measuring cup stains and other things indicating the most frequently used recipes.
The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan is a remarkable read. Surprisingly one of the few books to survive a proper translation to the screen.
A Gift of Joy by Helen Hayes is a joy to read. One of only a few actor autobiographies/biographies I own, this is tucked on the shelf along with Jimmy Stewart, James Earl Jones and Katherine Hepburn
What books are on your shelf that are worth returning to?

Tuesday Tunes Day – Maurice Sendak w/Melody Edition
Yesterday’s Google Doodle was in celebration of Maurice Sendak’s 85th birthday. I loved “Chicken Soup with Rice.” Simon Rueger has a great melody to go with it.
The joy of Sendak and imagination… What impression has the wordsmith behind “Where the Wild Things Are” made for you?
“Normal” is a Myth
A day late, not quite the dollar short, this was inspired by the Daily Post Prompt, Is being “normal” — whatever that means to you — a good thing, or a bad thing? Neither?
“Normal is a myth.” Those were the first words one my professors said in a class I took at university. Which professor and which class, I don’t recall just yet, but it stuck with me.
Think back to your school days, be it degree-focused or earlier. What is it about ‘fitting in’ or ‘rebelling’ that seems to push the mindset of a particular age group? Is it conformity for conformity’s sake? Is it about rules – rigid, illogical, or otherwise?
Look at the sitcoms, the dramas, the various shows that offer characters that may/may not reflect us. Same for the movies and music.
There’s a quote/joke about normalcy: “Scientists say 1 out of 4 people is crazy. Check three friends. If they’re all right, it’s you.” Really? True, a lot can be said by the company you keep, but sometimes, the best ideas, the craziest ideas come from abnormal interpretations.
Then again, being ‘normal’ can’t be that bad, can it? Maybe safe, sane, somewhat dull. Have a label given to you? Congrats – you’re ‘normal’ by someone’s sorting system, whatever that may be. Does the label fit, or do you care?
Normal’s a myth, there’s lots of uniqueness out there! (smile)

Sunday Snapshot – Fountain, too Edition
Fountain’s Foundation
Regardless of the centerpiece’s design or nay,
The purpose remains the same:
Of the flow of ideas, upward, out
The cascading of ideas continue to spout
Making a splash with every drop
The rippling effects hard to stop-
With each note sounded, or program played
And with every story, fact or fiction, thick or thin,
Combine imagination and innovation, another adventure begins.
So keep the water flowing, pave the way forward
Run to the place where the pen’s might outweighs the sword.
Friday Fast One – Imagination Edition
It pays to lose a library card. I don’t get into the city often, especially on a weeknight. But receiving the final notice that I had until Friday to collect my requested item (The Complete Shakespeare Sonnets) before it was sent back prompted me to change plans. I owned the book on cassette tape. It died. I cried. And finding a copy to buy was a bit hard – I tried (but I digress).
I grabbed my CD case off the holds shelf, went to the checkout stand – and didn’t have my card. Unlike my county card, I didn’t have the 13 digits memorized, so a replacement card was needed.
I loved it when the librarian told me the new cards came with a key chain version (I promptly put mine on my ‘card collection ring’ once the traditional size card was signed!). There were six designs to choose from and I was drawn to “Imagination,” although I confess, the decision was a challenge.
I was four years old again, a library card in hand, mind spinning with access to materials to nourish the mind, soul and imagination – oh the JOY!
Three quick quotes about the joys of reading:
Books let us into their souls and lay open to us the secrets of our own. ~William Hazlitt
The smallest bookstore still contains more ideas of worth than have been presented in the entire history of television. ~Andrew Ross
Good friends, good books and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life. ~Mark Twain
Best one to enjoy-
To quote LeVar Burton, “A book lets you zoom through time and space.”
How about you, dear reader – any particular small items that bring you joy?
Thursday Thoughts – The Joyful Edition
“Joy is not the absence of suffering. It is the presence of God.” ~ Robert Schuller
“The beating heart of the universe is holy joy.” ~ Martin Buber
“The gloom of the world is but a shadow; behind it, yet within our reach, is Joy.” ~ Fra Giovanni
“We can do nothing well without joy, and a good conscience which is the ground of joy.” ~ Sibbes
“I do not teach children, I give them joy.” ~ Isadora Duncan
Wondering What?
Today’s Daily Prompt asks, Tell us about a thing you’ll never write about.
Well, remembering my lesson from the last Daily Prompt that asked about evasive actions, I’ve decided….not to tell. (smile)
Would you dare share what you’d never write about?
