What is your outlook on life?
Outside looking in or inside looking out?
Near the action or from afar?
Dreams or destinies reaching the stars?
Ever stand back and see the whole picture or
Ruminate on the tiniest feature?
What is your outlook on life?
Half-empty, half-full?
Your place in life of push or pull?
What is your outlook on life?
Outstanding, standing still
Never dull or full of strife?
Dare to speak out or rather stay in?
Energetic eyes bright with a grin?
Release or gather – which would you rather?
Half-empty, half-full

One of the shortest plays I ever wrote doesn’t have much to play with at all. If anything, it was a silly short piece that mimicked the conversations my brother and I had whenever we were catching up. It was simple, basic, and said a lot with a little. In short, it drove our parents nuts.
Just Saying
Scene: Two armchairs, card table in between, with chips, cards and cola, TV volume low, the only illumination in an otherwise dark room.
Him: So?
Me: Nothing.
Him: Same.
Me: Fishin’?
Him: Plenty.
(Pause)
Him: Risks?
Me: Some.
Him: Pain?
Me: Nah.
Him: Good.
(Pause)
Me: Hey?
Him: Yeah.
Me: Really?
Him: Really.
Me: Sorry.
Him: Eh.
(Pause, flipping through channels to find something we know we’ve watched because what we haven’t seen just doesn’t make sense. Plans are made with just three words over a game of cards.)
Him: Morning?
Me: Sure.
Him: Cool.
What can I say? We knew how to catch up on ten months in twenty words or less. We’re closer now and our chats have doubled (maybe).
My best friend, T-, and I could quote one line or one word from a film and know exactly why it was chosen, how perfectly it fit and what to expect next. It irritated another friend of ours to no end, even after we tried to coax her into our code.
What about you? Do you have a shorthand with someone close? Certain words carry different meanings? Jokes that get more of a laugh or smile?
Just saying…
“I was here.” These are the words the Dutch Librarian finds written on a wall in some faraway room. He’s convinced that it was by the hand of the one he’s looking for.
Reading Denise’s entry, “We Leave Our Mark…,” I couldn’t help but wonder – why do we feel the need to leave our mark? Can we really go dancing through life without leaving an impression of any kind?
What if you’re an introvert? If so, find comfort and company with other introverts, thanks to 61 Musings. Some of us who leave our mark prefer to do so in a quiet fashion.
What if you’re an extrovert? You have a fabulous time in mixed company. (Well, it looks like you do; I’m most likely content in the corner of the loft, under the comforter and binge read.)
Writers leave their marks, line by line, word by word. Artists paint their perceptions of the world. Musicians add their notes.
Ever get an inkling that sitting still is wrong?
Ever get a tickling of some silly song?
Ever get a tingle down the middle of your spine?
Ever get a tang of guilt as you draw the line?
Either way – up or down
Each word written brings smiles, brings frowns
Entered in the reader’s eye
Embroiled in the heart’s own time
Etched into the soul
Each person’s bit of gold.
Whether you’ve seen “Despicable Me 2” or not, here is a wonderfully catchy tune to enjoy.
